Replace one of the Mario games with Civilization. I don't know transience well enough to predict, but that's a game that either goes at the top of the list, or off of it completely, depending on the person and if they respect classic PC gaming at all.

How does Aion compare to Rift? I was led to believe Rift was overall a little better, that it did everything Aion did and a bit more. And I've played Rift to 50. I got bored at that point largely because the guild I leveled with broke up and I didn't feel like relearning my character when I had been tanking on my cleric up until then, but I'm skeptical another current gen game would do as well considering the few things it felt like Rift was missing were in development at the time.

Urgh. I tried to find an adventure game that I thought belonged on this list and just couldn't. So... what am I missing? Probably Monkey Island, but I feel like I'm forgetting something else that was really big. Adventure games didn't really seem to come into their own until they went to 3d and games like Myst started coming out.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:LucasArts_adventure_games
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Sierra_Entertainment_video_games

Take your pick.

I personally thought the genre DIED with 3-d, the way you're defining it. Myst is not the same thing, and it's terrible besides. There aren't many games today that are about inventory items and creative uses of them these days, especially without any action mixed in. If you want to factor in modest action, you could look at a game like Out of This World or QFG. If not, any Quest game, any SCUMM game, Grim Fandando...lots of choices.

Another area where IMHO an honorable mention is warranted is the old shareware PC titles. I know a ton of you are console guys, but if you grew up on the computer, you can't deny the importance of being able to (nearly for free) pick up games like Commander Keen, Epic Pinball, One Must Fall, Tyrian, Duke Nukem...oh yeah, and a little game called Doom? Maybe Wolf 3-D and Doom won't make this list for obvious reasons, but the legacy left behind by companies like id, Apogee and Epic shaped the industry.

I'm also surprised there haven't been any RTS games. For the mostpart, RTS games exist on a flat plane. Maybe you look down at that plane, but they started off as 2-dimensional sprite-based games. Dune, Warcraft, Starcraft, C&C...it wasn't until Myth that I saw an RTS game that even remotely had a 3-d aspect to it.

Vinny Gambini: [Vinny hears a drip in the motel bathroom] Weren't you the last one to use the bathroom?
Lisa: So?
Vinny Gambini: Well, did you use the faucet?
Lisa: Yeah.
Vinny Gambini: Then why didn'tcha turn it off?
Lisa: I DID turn it off!
Vinny Gambini: Well, if you turned it off, why am I listening to it?
Lisa: Did it ever occur to you it could be turned off AND drip at the same time?
Vinny Gambini: No. Because if you'd turned it off, it wouldn't drip!
Lisa: Maybe it's broken.
Vinny Gambini: Is that what you're saying? It's broken?
Lisa: Yeah. That's it, it's broken.
Vinny Gambini: You sure?
Lisa: I'm positive.
Vinny Gambini: Maybe you didn't twist it hard enough.
Lisa: I twisted it just right.
Vinny Gambini: How could you be so sure?
Lisa: [sighs] If you will look in the manual, you will see that this particular model faucet requires a range of 10 to 16 foot-pounds of torque. I routinely twist the maximum allowable torquage.
Vinny Gambini: Well, how could you be sure you used 16 foot-pounds of torque?
Lisa: Because I used a Craftsman model 1019 Laboratory Edition Signature Series torque wrench. The kind used by Caltech high energy physicists. And NASA engineers.
Vinny Gambini: Well, in that case, how can you be sure THAT's accurate?
Lisa: Because a split second before the torque wrench was applied to the faucet handle, it had been calibrated by top members of the state AND federal Department of Weights and Measures... to be dead on balls accurate!
[She rips a page out of a magazine and hands it to him]
Lisa: Here's the certificate of validation.
Vinny Gambini: Dead on balls accurate?
Lisa: It's an industry term.

Yes, or at least not to the degree that everyone lauds it. Not that I *dis*like it, but I don't find it to be all that awesome, either. It's totally like a 6/10 for me, 7 at best. I don't get the appeal and find it to be massively overrated. When I got to the end of VGMC4 (my first contest) and the ToC was announced after that, I was left scratching my head as to why this was the prohibitive favorite.

And I'm not saying that to troll.

just finding this. Oh boy, what *would* I put on this list? And for reference, I'm going to define "2d" for the mostpart as pre-32-bit. So there are a few choices that you might argue are actually 3d.

* Pong - for being the first noteworthy video game
* Pac-man - for similar reasons to Pong, except that it can be fun for more than 2 minutes at a time if you don't suck at it. (Am I seriously the first person in this thread to mention pac-man?)
* Combat - because there was simply no better game for Atari than MF'ing COMBAT!!
* Other really old games - Space Invaders, Asteroids, Q-Bert, Qix, I could go on. There are lots of old games people could bring up that DON'T belong IMO, like Missile Command, Joust (so overrated), Discs of Tron, and pretty much any derivative of Space Invaders
* Summer Games (C64 represent!)
* Donkey Kong
* SMB1
* SMB3
* Marble Madness - the view might be isometric, with some changes in elevation, but I would not call it 3-d
* Tetris
* 1942 - this is the first true rail-shooter for me. Sorry, R-type.
* Contra (original. The sequels just sucked and related games like Commando and Ikari Warriors just don't hold up.
* TMNT arcade for the definitive arcade beat em up experience
* The Simpsons arcade as a good follow-up
* Rad Racer - not because it was very good, but because it was the one racing game everybody had
* Excitebike - see Rad Racer, but very different style of racer, and was actually fun
* Rygar - first true console adventure I played, Zelda came later for me, and this did a lot of things Zelda did not
* One Must Fall 2097 - to represent all the great PC shareware titles. I feel like I should opt for a Commander Keen or a Duke Nukem (obviously I can't pick Wolf 3-d or d00m,) but this was always a big favorite of mine
* Tyrian - for one other solid shareware pick. This one wins out over Raptor.
* Civilization - this has to be there. This is *the* strategy game series, if ever there was one.
* SimCity - deserves an actual place on the list and not just an honorable mention
* Starcraft - not my favorite as I don't love RTS games, but c'mon. It's freaking *Starcraft*.
* Sonic - my pick for the series is #2, personally. I honestly didn't know anyone who owned 3, nor did I care much for it when I got to try it.
* something from each of DW/DQ, FF, and PS to satisfy generic RPG fans...oh yeah, and Might and Magic as well. The later games were sorta 3-d, so take World of Xeen there. On that note...
* Heroes of Might and Magic
* Minesweeper and Windows Solitaire - lol choices, yes, but for "most essential?" Probably more man-hours have been spent on Freecell than the vast majority of games we tout around here.
* Ogre Battle
* Super Metroid
* Maniac Mansion - or some other SCUMM game. I never played much MM, tbh. Monkey Island? Indy and the Fate of Atlantis?
* DKC
* SF2
* MK2 (or 3 if you prefer)
* SSB
* Pokemon RBY
* SoM
* CT
* The Lost Vikings

And I'm gonna cut myself off there before this post gets too ridiculous. It's a shame there are a lot of old games that I legitimately have to consider 3-d. Any space sim, any "Quest" game...and then there are tons of old classics I just didn't feel needed to be on here, like Paperboy, Bubble Bobble, Deadly Towers...

and yeah, PS4 is like the only good PS tbh, and not only is it good, It's Boss ****** among Genesis games good.

Stay away from the awful crap that is PSII though. As bad as the game is, it was also frustratingly difficult. I've probably never been so frustrated with an RPG ever bar the infamous Dragon Quest II.

I actually like PS2, and started up a new game of it recently. Granted, I come from old school days when grinding for exp was common, and I accepted some of the other annoying aspects of it like not having any realistic idea which weapons could be equipped by whom til trying them. Still, I think you're somewhat mistaken if you say the game is hard. Frustrating? Sure. Annoying? Definitely at times. But hard? No. Hard was playing the original and having to stay near the town, knowing there was no way in hell you could beat two enemies without going back to rest.

I recognize that PS4 is superior, but I played it for the first time SOO much later than I did PS2 that my subjective and objective opinions are different. But PS3 was terrible. I couldn't get past like 3 minutes of that game.

no, they're completely different

Well, they are, but Dynasty Warriors is a spin-off of RotTK. I doubt either has 15 games independent of each other, although they both come darn close. But if you can only count main-line series, you'd be able to use...Final Fantasy? (And only because X-2 makes 15.) You pretty much have to assume they mean franchise/IP.

And as for PC not counting, well pewp. Not like my submission counts, anyway. But how can you not count the computer as a platform? I play more games on PC than on anything else! If I altered that to say "DOS" or "IBM PC" instead, would that count? There were definitely 5 M&M games during the pre-Windows era.

I should have said like Farmville or something and tried to argue that Facebook is a platform.

1 vs 14
Wild card

5 vs 10
4 vs 11

3 vs 12
6 vs 9

7 vs 8
2 vs 13

In a sports setting, it doesn't make much sense, but in a voting countest, it would give the "best loser" a path back in. Of course, the way I positioned it, they'd have to play #1, but that can be easily juxtaposed.

Perhaps, but I'd feel bad for the Braves for having the misfortune to be in the same division as the Phillies. They aren't giving up without a fight, but at this point it's pretty unlikely they can win their division since the Phillies record is just ridiculous. Up until recently the Braves had the second-best record in the NL. and fourth overall behind...The Red Sox and the Yankees, also in the same division.

I'd say the playoffs are more interesting with those two teams included, even though I'm from Philly and would be perfectly happy to not think about either the Braves or the Yankees in the postseason.

To be fair, baseball also used to only have two divisions. Best of west plays best of east. It made sense. When they added a third division, it increased the likelihood that there would be a second-place team in one division better than a first-place team somewhere else. (Look at both east divisions this year!) IMHO, with three or more divisions, there needs to be at least one wild card. I don't think baseball needs more than one, as with 162 regular season games, that had better count for something, and "home field advantage" doesn't make sense when you've already clinched a playoff position with 30 games left to play.
