I looked in PSOne Classics and it wasn't there. The Final Fantasies and Silent Hill, however, were.

I'm confused. Wasn't MGS1 released on PlayStation Network in November 2009 in PAL territories (currently in Ireland)?

other m is awful by any standards, even the incredibly low bar that the wii has set for it's library.

This is pretty much what fans of the series view the game to be. In the case of the story, rightfully so, but ONLY because it was marketed to "be the final statement on Samus's characterization". When I watched an LP of the game in January, I didn't feel that Other M even tried to do that - instead just introducing ideas and doing very little with them. Hardly a "last word".

So if you're going to play Other M, don't go into it with any story-based expectations, because you will be disappointed - the story lacks focus and the script is horrible (the only thing outright bad about the game IMO) and creates a somewhat abundance of undue melodrama. And I don't like the game's portrayal of Samus, although who the heck does? But I also find the story surprisingly easy to ignore since...well, 1.5-hour breaks between cutscenes in a 12-hour game, and cutscenes aren't as long as the 30-minute chatfests I've heard are found in games like Metal Gear Solid 4 and Star Ocean 4.

I don't feel that Other M is a story-heavy game at all, although I do feel that it WANTS to be story-heavy. I also feel as if a cutscene or two was haphazardly thrown out.

GMUN, I've been discussing my thoughts on Other M with a YouTube user by the name of LordXamot. If you want, I can let you in on what we've been discussing.

Well Super Mario Galaxy is my favorite Mario and Twilight Princess is my third favorite Zelda (slightly behind Ocarina of Time and The Wind Waker with A Link to the Past being a close fourth and Majora's Mask a very distant fifth).

Ironically enough, I'm right now playing a game that's somewhat reminiscent of Other M in that its combat is kinda repetitive but very satisfying anyway, and that its camera perspective is pretty similar. Its name is Ico.

My only really big complaints with Other M are lack of gameplay variety and no new power-ups. The story is very disappointing but also surprisingly easy to ignore (at least I felt that way when I watched an LP of it back in January) and quite frankly it would actually be really good if it wasn't for an absolutely horrible script (the only thing outright bad about the game...and there's a LOT I'd do to "fix" Other M before I changed its story or script, or even made the game less linear), total lack of focus, and abundance of undue melodrama.

So yeah, the #1 thing I'd do to fix Other M would be adding rail shooter and vehicle sections.

Is Other M Really as bad as I have heard?

no Metroid experience by the way

It isn't, but I have no idea how GMUN has it in his top 25 games. It's only "bad" compared to Super Metroid, Prime, and Echoes.

Then again, I'm the guy who prefers Other M to Brawl and Majora's Mask (although neither of the latter two is my kind of game).

My input:

Highest Priority - Super Mario Galaxy & Twilight Princess
Next-Highest - Super Mario Galaxy 2 & Resident Evil 4
Get at Some Point - Metroid Prime 3
On-The-Fence - New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Metroid: Other M, Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Avoid - Mario Kart Wii

I have never played Skyward Sword, Xenoblade, DKCR, or either Kirby game, and I'm not exactly all that interested in any of them aside from maybe Zelda. I just got a PS3 yesterday evening, as a matter of fact.

Actually, the list of Wii games I'm most interested in is best symbolized by ScottishDuck17's top 10 (and the Wii is his favorite current-gen console BTW):

10) Fragile Dreams: Farewell Ruins of the Moon
9) Sin & Punishment: Star Successor
8) Sonic Colors
7) The House of the Dead: Overkill
6) Okami
5) A Boy and His Blob
4) The Last Story
3) The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
2) NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams
1) Super Mario Galaxy

All right, time to try this. ANOTHER PLAYSTATION ALL-STARS ROSTER PREDICTION.

(also the game already looks like it'll be better than Brawl. But then again, I view Brawl to be extremely overrated so I guess my opinion there should be taken with a grain of salt...)

Kratos (God of War)
Sweet Tooth (Twisted Metal)
Fat Princess
Sly Cooper
Colonel Radec (Killzone 2)
PaRappa the Rapper
Nathan Drake (Uncharted)
Big Daddy (BioShock)
Cole MacGrath (inFamous)
Snake (Metal Gear Solid)
Sackboy (LittleBigPlanet)
Jak & Daxter
Ratchet & Clank
Nariko (Heavenly Sword)
Wander (Shadow of the Colossus)
Lightning (Final Fantasy XIII)
James Bond
Crash Bandicoot
Spyro the Dragon
Chris Redfield (Resident Evil)
Gabriel Belmont (Castlevania: Lords of Shadow)
Someone from The Legend of Dragoon
Chimera (Resistance)
Dante (DmC)
Someone from Heavy Rain
Someone from GTA
Amaterasu Okami
Kevin Butler
Ezio Auditore da Firenze (Assassin's Creed II)
Klonoa

And...there you have it. Thirty characters. Still shorter than Brawl's roster, but oh well.

I only included him because he was rumored to be part of the roster and would tie in with some upcoming James Bond movie distributed by Sony (don't really know the details since I'm not a James Bond fan). And yes, Bond is on IGN's "rumored characters" list. I brought every character on that list into my predicted roster aside from Yorda (from Ico), which would not really make sense seeing how she's supposed to be this defenseless ethereal girl who is supposed to be escorted out of the castle by the game's eponymous protagonist (oh, still very much looking forward to playing that game!).

"...what with many people expecting Xbox 720 and PS4 to be revealed..."

Wait, I thought it was confirmed a good deal before E3 that those consoles would not be revealed. Whatever. Plus I don't really see there to be any need for a new console generation to start anytime soon.

...well I can't say I really agree on Zelda seeing how my top three games in that series are Ocarina of Time, The Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess (with LTTP a close fourth, and all four of those all-time favorites of mine)...not to mention what I've heard about Skyward Sword doesn't exactly excite me to play that game...

Also, while my favorite Mario game is Super Mario Galaxy, I'd like to see a return to Super Mario 64's gameplay style for the next 3D Mario.

Next Zelda game IMO should either be a direct sequel to Twilight Princess (though please don't include Midna or anything about the Twili...not that I hated them or anything, but I just don't want to see them return!), or it should star someone other than Link.

Series I most want to see revived...not the Chrono series please, I don't want to see that done. Probably...Metroid? Either a SOTC-style boss rush (haven't played that game yet, but I may very well get around to doing so in as little as under a week, and it sounds like something more faithful to Super Metroid than any game in that series developed since aside from Metroid Prime 1 - pretty sad that I live in a world where Nintendo pretty much sold the Metroid series to Sony), a horror survival game, or an Other M-style action game except made by Platinum Games instead of Team Ninja and with a lot less story.

Also IMO people should quite complaining about Big Daddy's inclusion in Playstation All-Stars whatever (I'm sorry, but that's quite possibly my most hated VG name right now). At least both of his games have been on the PS3 - contrast this to Snake, whose history on Nintendo consoles consists of three non-canon games, a remake of MGS1 that's decried by the series' fanbase, and a port of MGS3 that's viewed similarly.

Here was a list of characters I came up with for who I hope will end up in the game without problems, including those currently announced:

Kratos
Sweet Tooth
Fat Princess
Sly Cooper
Colonel Radec
PaRappa
Nathan Drake
Big Daddy
Cole MacGrath
Solid Snake
Sackboy
Ratchet & Clank
Jak & Daxter
Nariko
Wander
Lightning
James Bond

I allowed Lightning here instead of some other FF character solely to expand on the number of females in the roster. Feel free to disagree.

I'm actually really excited for PSASBR, albeit only because I'm very interested in a good number of series which the game will likely draw content from (e.g. BioShock, Uncharted, hopefully MGS and Team Ico). I've pretty much come to believe that we anticipate games like that just for fanservice without caring how good the actual game may be (see also: the really good but extremely overrated Super Smash Bros. Brawl).

JRPGs in general are structured in linear fashion. Problem is, I'm pretty sure that Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII, Mother 3, Skies of Arcadia, and Super Mario RPG don't start with trudges throw long narrow corridors for the first 20 hours, and that their storylines are way more interesting.

(As an aside, I don’t want to hear anyone complain about a game like FFXIII being linear and then proclaim their love for Uncharted. These games are about as linear as it gets).

Why not?

People expect RPGs to have a certain degree of openness that action games doesn't have to have.

Even as someone who generally prefers his games to be linear (unless the game has "Metroid" in the name), Final Fantasy XIII's level design (and the entire game aside from the levelling-up system and maybe the battle system) seemed like it was on autopilot from the LP I watched. Compare this to a "linear" game like Super Mario Galaxy where you're constantly hopping from planet to planet, and the vast majority of planets have their own "personality" just as each room/area in the best Zelda and Metroid games do. I'm watching ScottishDuck17's LP of Galaxy as he's uploading it and it pretty much astonishes me about every other minute, if not more often (also that's his favorite Mario game, favorite Wii game, and 2nd favorite 3D platformer behind Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal).

Even compared to the other RPGs I've watched LPs of recently - Mother 3, Skies of Arcadia, and Mass Effect (the former two being especially enticing) - Final Fantasy XIII's level design seemed extremely off-putting, and I'm having an even more difficult time accepting that Final Fantasy XIII is in the same series as Final Fantasy VI than I have accepting that Metroid: Other M is in the same series as Super Metroid and Metroid Prime.

But, like I said, they're just LPs. So I guess you shouldn't take my word for it. However, I have a good feeling that Mother 3 and Skies would become all-time favorites of mine if I played them - I enjoyed watching the LPs that much.

Ocarina of Time, The Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess all made me cry at points when I watched LPs of them recently (to the point where A Link to the Past's lack of plot in comparison felt jarring when I watched an LP of that). Is there supposed to be something wrong with that?

Well...now this board is a board where The Wind Waker has beaten A Link to the Past and Final Fantasy IX in one contest, so...I dunno.

Also Ulti's post did not mention Yoshi's Island, Ocarina of Time, or Super Metroid (which has my favorite ending stretch of any game), so it's kinda fail there too.

And yes, I prefer The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess to A Link to the Past, but Super Metroid is my favorite Metroid (narrowly beating out Prime). Dunno what that says.

My favorite Nintendo final boss is Mother Brain in Super Metroid. Other ones I'd list before The Wind Waker's are Ganon in Ocarina of Time and Giant Baby Bowser in Yoshi's Island.

The Wind Waker's final boss is ace though. The game itself is my second favorite Zelda after Ocarina of Time, although it's probably almost tied with it (if it had one more dungeon and/or less of a pacing buzzkill than the Triforce Quest, best Zelda here we come!).

Then again, watching YouTube LPs of games make me want to play the games more (for instance, I'd be totally pumped up to play Skies of Arcadia or Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal), so there.

And I honestly don't really get why Majora's Mask is oft-regarded to be in the upper echelon of the series.
