This sort of thing does come back to bite your profits in the ass sooner or later, I guarantee it. It's just a more delayed reaction the bigger a brand name you've built up.

This right here is the balance that bigger companies have to maintain. With smaller publishers like Atlus, fan loyalty is sales: you lose your committed supporters, you go out of business. Simple. With Capcom, it's as much about pushing popular products and garnering new fans as it is keeping old ones satisfied; it's an unfortunate fact that in business, committed buyers are *always* willing to put up with more **** than potential buyers, and companies exploit this.

With the MML3 fiasco, however, I feel it's fair to say that Capcom's pushed it a little too much.

Heroic Mario is right: unlike Atlus, Capcom is a huge company who's focusing more on maintaining profitability than promoting fan loyalty (through things like localizations, etc.). However, given the outrage over MML3, it's likely that they've gone too far in that direction, and that this will end up hurting sales more than it will help in the long run. Still, we'll have to wait and see; hopefully they can pick things up a bit and return to former glory.

I wouldn't expect, say, God of War meet-ups to have any more attractive people; that's just how it goes with super obsessive fans.

I think this whole Xenoblade debacle is just a way of boosting NoE's rep. In past years, those guys have been terrible; they've snubbed WarioWare: Twisted, Electroplankton and countless other great titles. Now, though, they're getting their time in the sun thanks to the Xenoblade hype.

I might be willing to buy into this if it gives us some hope! Seriously though, Xenoblade is easily the best game graphically on the Wii (excluding maybe the Galaxy games), it'd be an easy contender for best RPG on the system (and, from second hand reports, this gen), and there's really no reason not to release it.

Nintendo learned a valuable lesson once Wind Waker was released -- they can design anything and people will defend it to the death. Barring Fire Emblem games, Nintendo has not made a good game since and we don't even get to credit them for Fire Emblem since Intelligent Systems isn't really stuck with Nintendo higher-ups getting in the way of the design process.

Well, that's not quite true. You've got Smash, the Wario Ware series, the Paper Mario titles, and the Kirby games; then again, those are also developed by second-party developers, so I guess I'm just proving your point!

Either way, I find it hilarious that other branches of Nintendo are rubbing it in NoA's face. NoE pushing up the release date AND promoting a sweet boxed set? Awesome. Once again, "sub-par" doesn't mean what you think it means given the context you're losing.

1) Feel free to inform me about the context I'm "losing" and why sub-par doesn't work.

Second, if you think averaging an 80% isn't even an "average" game, including score-tanking deviants, then, uh... I don't think I'm the one that needs to wake up.

2) 80% is passable, pushing on average. If you want to go by percentages, Colors failed to break even that; if you want to go by numbers, then 24 (removing the "score-tanking deviants" lol) gave it a score of 80% or below, compared to 16 on the other side.

Given all that, "sub-par" is basically the perfect description of the game's critical reception. Of course, this doesn't include a couple of important points:

-it's entirely possible that you liked the game more than the critics did
-it's entirely possible that even if you liked the game, you can admit that most people believed it wasn't quite enough, and certainly not enough to consider the franchise "salvaged" or whatever

I like how you had to say that none gave it "over" 90%, since there are indeed 90%s there, and you include 80% in the low, but not the high, even though it's above the calculated average.

Why are you throwing in unnecessary stuff? It's simpler than you're making it out to be: even ignoring averages by an almost 2-to-1 margin, critics gave the game an 80% lower than they did 81% or higher. Why that 80% is relevant I'll get to in the second part of this post.

I have *no* idea what that 90% comment's all about, though. Of course there are 90% reviews; that's why I said "no review over 90%." I'm assuming that you think I'm trying to skew the stats, which is untrue and unfair.

And still you prove that you don't get how averages work. The majority of the reviews are within the 80 to 85 range. Outliers would include down to 75 and up to 90. There are no scores inflated past that, but there are a small handful that go as low as 70.So even if you boost the range to 75-85, the sub-70s are STILL the only ones outside of the common range and even the outliers. Therefore, they affect the score a lot more negatively than any high scores. And there's very few sub-70s, so they're clearly not the "average." Thus, they cause the score to tank slightly because they aren't balanced. So if you include those in the range, it's averaging ATLEAST an 8, which is by no means "sub-par."

Man, you care more about this petty argument than I do! There's no need to throw in standard deviation **** to try and figure this out, because it's much simpler: most critics (by a 2:1 ratio, remember) felt Colors was an 8/10 game or below. Nothing more. Forget the 78% if it helps you sleep at night: my point- which, you'll remember, was that Colors was a mediocre game, a claim I later changed to "passable" still holds for 2/3 of the critics.

But you also don't know what "sub-par" means since your context doesn't fit it, so whatever.

So here we go. If in your book, 80% means average/good/great/GoAT, then good for you. I'd also recommend waking up a bit and appreciating the reality of the industry: score inflation is rampant, and not being able to break an 80% average usually indicates a lackluster title.

Then again, given the rest of your post, I'm assuming that you're defining "sub-par" as something involving >= 2 SDs from the mean, which is completely asinine and missing the point.

No, really, all these professional reviewers have their salaries paid for by advertising dollars. Now who do you think buys ads on a site that posts video game reviews? Posting a review in your defense for a game you like or to bash a game you don't like means you have no other argument.

If you're a conspiracy nut- oh hai, Ulti- then this could explain why certain games get inflated scores. But what about the case of games with sub-par scores? Did the critics demand money and not get it, or something? Do they give other games low scores to make the paid-for games seem "better" by comparison? (which is unlikely, given rampant score inflation of the industry)

Are you incapable of seeing beyond your own opinion? Critics and I don't always see eye-to-eye (see: Gamespot's FE10 review), but for the most part, their judgment's sound; after all, they play games for a living, and are kept employed only so long as they keep pumping out quality reviews.

Pretty bold claim. So you're saying that most critics get paid off, or just a high percentage? Did this happen in the case of Sonic Colors, where critics asked Sega for money and then decided to rate the game poorly? Doesn't that seem less likely than them, you know, just disliking it?

3. Sonic Colors was coming off a long string of flops. Negative hype hurts scores, every time.

I could make the exact opposite argument: Sonic Colors was the culmination of a gradual return to form, from Sonic 2006 (which was complete garbage) to Sonic Unleashed (which was half playable, half garbage) to Colors, which was supposed to streamline out the rest of the trash. Critics then decided to give the game inflated scores, as they were simply satisfied to be playing a Sonic game that actually focused on its strengths.

See how easy it is? Bottom line, we can't know what was running through the minds of each individual critic. We can however, know the scores they gave the game; on average, it was a 78%.

4. Linking to that basically shows that you have nothing to say yourself and not only probably haven't played the game, but rely on other people to form your opinions for you.

Except that I wasn't trying to make an argument about the game itself, but rather that many people- see: paid, professional critics- agree with me. once again, dat reading comprehension
