I just don't like the show in general. There's no actual strategy involved and the competitions are meaningless

Xillia 1 and Arise have the same issue where the base gameplay and mechanics are very fun vs regular enemies, but vs a boss it' hot garbage.

In Arise you are basically playing a different game when fighting bosses.
which is crazy because they intentionally corrected that in Xillia 2. Must've had a different team on Arise or something

it's fascinating how boring bosses are in a game that actively ruins the ability to combo them
yeah it became a chore quickly. when I knew a boss was coming up I cranked the difficulty down because there was no satisfaction in beating them on higher difficulties.

How difficult was it? Is it grindy?
Very easy, almost every trophy you just get by playing the game "normally" (fighting enemies, engaging with mechanics of the game). I only had to grind for one of the trophies because it's luck based to get

I dont do remasters typically unless I havent played the game previously but Xillia was awesome. I dont like it as much as Graces F but I like it a lot. Got platinum on Graces F, Xillia, and Xillia 2. After that I started not enjoying the series as much with Zestiria, that Vesperia newer edition and ended up dropping the series. I keep telling myself I should try Arise but I just am not pulled in by gameplay videos.

Do you have Graces F remaster? That was peak Tales to me.
I have Graces f remaster, yeah. It's near the top for me but Vesperia will probably always be my favorite.

Oh I didn't realize the remaster was out yet. Just read Xillia and assumed it was the ps3 release.
Yeah it came out on Halloween

Is that as tedious as the Symphonia platinum?

Don't remember what that one is but probably not. I only had to actively grind for one trophy. The rest I got just by playing normally and swapping my party around a lot

I finished the main story, kind of (credits rolled but there's still stuff after).

My thoughts broken down to what I didn't care for, some QoL improvements I think that could be made, and what I liked:

THE BAD
I actually didn't care for the battle system. I think it's really boring and less strategic than the turn based games. Status moves don't really do much in this game (can you even inflict the megas with status effects?) and the stat changing moves take too much time to use for how short they last. Given that in trainer battles, knocking out your opponent basically resets your CDs, I never found a use for them and even when I tried I would get knocked out or taken to a one-hit scenario. Also with the lack of abilities a lot of Pokemon lost their identity in the game, in my opinion.

I don't like the dodge mechanics of the game, either.

Also the way the environment can block your moves (both literally AND the fact that your own Pokemon will get "stuck" on it) is actually insane, unintuitive, and unfun. It hurts my heart that my Pokemon are idiots.

THE QOLs
I think some QoL changes to be more fluid with gameplay are
  • having an "auto heal" function. Unlike past entries, you're going to take damage, you're going to get status'd, and it's going to happen frequently. A way to quickly heal would be nice.
  • A quicker way to get around. I really like exploring Lumiose but towards the end of the game I just wanted to get it over with. I wish there were a bike/skateboard or something to make movement speed a little faster.
  • If a Pokemon evolves through an item, it should still show in the party list but when you go to evolve that's when it prompts you for the item. This one's kinda small but I feel like it made sense to me (and perhaps to kids playing that might not want to go through their stones or look things up)
  • Please make it more obvious when a Pokemon learns a new move and doesn't have space. I feel like every level up I just glued my eyes to the left column because I didn't want to accidentally miss a useful move. Also on the subject of moves, they should really do a move pass with TMs (Flaaffy can learn Ice Punch... but not Thunder Punch? And Feraligatr can't learn Ice Punch at all? Huh?)
  • I think Pokemon that are fainted should be guaranteed captures. It's really annoying that they're not, especially given that Pokemon don't continuously respawn (they should).

THE GOOD
I loved exploring Lumiose City/having the whole game take place there. It felt really cozy and I loved going up on the roofs and jumping around with Rotom. The only critique I'd have is that there's so much loot piling up that it never felt exciting to find. I never felt "oh wow I'm glad I went here" it felt kind of repetitive after a while.

The way side quests were presented is probably my favorite aspect of any Pokemon game to-date. It was really cool, felt like you were living in the city and making friends, and gave many forgotten/overlooked Pokemon a little moment. It really made me think about how some people say "every Pokemon is someone's favorite Pokemon!" and a lot of the side quests made me smile. Definitely the highlight of the game for me.

Overall it was pretty fun, but by the end I was getting kind of bored. Also I was going to use spoiler tags but I don't actually think anything I wrote was particularly spoiler-ish. If anyone disagrees I can edit my message. I'd give it a 7.5/10 overall.

Hello all! Today's mechanic to discuss is the Lucky Fountain from Golden Sun! I'm not sure if something like this appears in other games, but in Golden Sun you collect items called "Lucky Medals" throughout your journey and eventually can use them in a Lucky Fountain which is a mini game of sorts that grants very powerful (for time of acquisition) gear that can't be found anywhere else.

In the original Golden Sun, the Lucky Medals can be found in crates, chests, and they can also drop from monsters. In the sequel, they are a non-renewable resource with only 21 being available in the game (info taken from the Golden Sun wiki). You can also toss gold coins into the fountain but you will only get gold coins in return (does anyone do this?)

Overall I think it's an extremely fun mechanic and something I always looked forward to in my playthroughs. The excitement of resetting to get the gear that I want really made the game stand out when I was a kid.

Hi all, I just have been thinking about a lot of video game mechanics that I find interesting/annoying/engaging and wanted to make a poll series asking what everyone thinks about them! Ideally for these polls I'd like relatively specific mechanics that can be referenced to certain games but aren't so vague that they apply to too many things. For example, something that would be too vague: "Do you like status effects in games?" Something more specific would be: "Do you like this mechanic: the "confusion" status effect in video games" And then I would add a brief description, such as: The "Confusion" status effect typically occurs in role playing games (such as the Pokemon and Persona series) and typically involves your controlled character being unable to act or attacking your own party members.

Each topic will probably have a brief overview of the mechanic and games that it appears in (not necessarily an exhaustive list). They can also be unique/specific to games but ideally these games and mechanics/features would be recognizable enough for enough of the board to vote on. For example, my poll for tomorrow will probably be "Do you like this mechanic: The Lucky Fountain from the Golden Sun series".

I would love suggestions for future mechanics to poll on if there is enough interest/discussion in here. In your suggestions, it would be great if you can list the information included in the previous paragraph (brief description + games it can be found in).

So without further ado, for today's topic, The "Cancel All" mechanic typically occurs in turn based role playing games (such as Legend of Heroes: Trails and Dragon Quest) where enemies delete all the positive buffs you've put on your characters. Do you like this mechanic? Anything to add? Other games it appears in?

Ranked is separated into seasons. Season 1 gives you Greninjas stone, and the season ends on November 4, 2025, at 9:59 PM PST. So approximately 20 days, which we might be able to assume will be the same for the other two.

You can get the Greninjite until Wednesday, November 5, 2025 05:59 UTC. You'll need to get to rank K by then.

If you haven't already unlocked the feature yet, you can go into the Menu and click on Link Play, then hit the + button to Check News. It will give you more detailed information.

Overall great remake. I like how the extra quests gave some more screen time to the bracers of Liberl.

There were only a few things that I feel like didn't translate well from 2D to 3D for this game.

I miss Julia's whirlwind of revealing herself in the church (This one is kind of a joke, but still something silly would have been cool)

And perhaps it's because I already knew his identity, but Weissman/Alba looks wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too sinister in 3D lol

Honestly I would like it if it were balanced well... Even in the open world Scarlet and Violet games I felt like I caught all the Pokemon so quickly and just kept getting the same ones... the love of the adventure wore out quick because too many areas had too many Pokemon. The flip side of that is that the Pokemon I would want could be locked away near the end of a region's exploration and I would feel like I didn't get to use them.

It'd be hard to make the adventure seem fun and rewarding when the reality is there just aren't enough Pokemon to make all regions feel "full" without also making each new area/route seem barren.

People love to praise Engage's gameplay (and it's not uncommon to see people say that it has the best gameplay in the series), but there's a lot that kind of makes me disagree.
I agree because to me it seems there's way too much going on that is enabled by the rings.

I do have the DLC and you're right, it's beyond busted, but also it's so cluttered.

whats cat up to
I want to do the Emblem Ring Paralogues but then my team will be so fucking busted by the time I get to the main story chapters, so I'm trying to use benched units for them but changing inventories is such a fucking slog.

I would change this aspect of the game (or make it so you can turn off exp in these paralogues) + fix the inventory system, it looks cluttered as fuck. I especially hate it with respect to forging and engraving.
