Saw was a good film.

But it's where my interest in the franchise began and ended.

Nah. Rewatched it a while ago and honestly found it cringe as fuck.
I've never seen it, but I voted no because movies like saw about people getting gruesomely tortured is at the bottom of movies I'd want to watch. I dislike the entire concept of it and movies like it.
When does a candle become a blaze? When does a ripple become a tidal wave?
When does the reason become the blame? When does a man become a monster?
Been watching the Saw movies this week as a marathon with my wife. We watched Saw 1 - 5 so far.

1 really is the best one and they just go downhill after. 4 onward are just horrible

Generally, I really enjoy or totally love all the movies in the main franchise except for Saw 3D (7th movie). My favorites are probably II and X, though.
Without truth, there is nothing.
Really good movie.

the later ones in the series go full like gore-no torture porn style, and that's fun in its own way, but its so much harder to recommend, because you need to sort of have a specific idea going in to like the later Saw movies. Even by the second one its starting to lean into this kind of thing.

The first one is literally just a really good thriller movie. Probably because they didn't have the budget to be as over the top as they later were.
Never saw Saw, even more sad is I never got to see Saw on a seesaw, while holding a saw by the sea.
Water+Fall=Radiation.
I liked it, but always thought the twist was a little too unbelievable which kind of ruined it for me
Sack to crack, going to town
It was okay for what it tried to do. The same can be said for the second film. However, it is 3 when it started to rely more on blood and guts more than story.

Never sat and watched it or any of the others. I've seen parts, read what the story is, etc. - it just has no appeal for me, similar to Hostel and others.

I thought the first Saw was bad/funny. Who didn't laugh when Cary Elwes lost his shit? They took a great actor and made him look like a silly goose.
"I'm going to have to disagree with everything you say from now on. Go ahead, say babies shouldn't be skinned alive, see which side I'm on."
Yes

I I love the whole franchise honestly and it was always a tradition to go see them in October.

At least V/H/S has brought back that tradition somewhat

Nope. I despise the very idea of serial killers and bitterly resent society's obsession with them.

One of the few horror movies to actually scare me. What sets it apart, for me, is that those things could actually be done to a person. You don't even need a particular skillset to make many of them happen.

The first one isn't really gory. In fact, it might do a discretion cut for any actual gore in the entire movie. It's way more of a thriller than just gory torture porn.

The premise was interesting, but I really don't like slasher type flicks. Suspense or paranormal type horror are ok, but stuff where most of the cast is only there to be systematically gutted or dismembered in some way is a turnoff.

Pretty good, seeing the breakdown of the characters over the course of the movie is fascinating.

Though I thought the fight scenes were pretty silly
Let's-a go! Okey dokey!
I watched the first two again because of this topic and enjoyed them as much as I remember (well, as much as these movies can be enjoyed upon re-watching).

I've unfortunately decided to just to roll with it and go through with the whole franchise as I have far too much downtime and not enough energy/attention span for worthwhile endeavors.

I'll report back after each movie.

Three still sucks btw.

That doesn't make it a movie I have any desire to watch. Maybe it bumps it up from the literal bottom of the list of movie concepts by a step or two.

I also didn't have any interest in the Saw movies for a long time, I couldn't wrap my head around the concept of a movie whose premise was just torture and gore.

But, there's actually a lot more depth to it than that as it explored different dimensions of ethics and psychology. The torture aspect is actually not that prominent, and most of the movies feel like a slightly more mature and much better written version of a Criminal Minds episode tbh.

I usually do 31 horror movies in 31 days for October/Halloween, anyway, and I'm already in it, so might as well go all in.

I think I'm going to make a separate topic so I can be as spoilery as I want.
