The whining from modern video game companies neglects a lot of the reasons game prices dropped.
Games used to have healthy rental and second-hand markets, so prices had to be adjusted to account for those lost sales.
We moved from purpose-build cartridges containing computer chips to discs. Game developers had to negotiate with the system owner on the price to produce carts and Nintendo often charged a large markup. Discs are much less expensive to produce.
The digital market further lowered costs and all but killed the second-hand and rental markets.
