Ornstein & Smough are THE iconic difficult Soulsborne boss if you ask me. The contrasting fighting styles, the relentless pressure, the mid-fight transformation popularizing the concept of multi-phase boss fights, being the halfway-point skill check roadblock for the game. A perfect combination of difficulty and thematic weight. I think you don't get a future fight as challenging as Malenia without them.Yeah, agreed with Ornstein & Smough as feeling like the iconic Soulsborne choice.
I think the thing with Whitney is that there are way harder bosses in Pokemon. Cynthia, Volo, Ultra Necrozma, those two Furfrou on Route 6 in XY, etc.Even in the same game Red is much, much harder than Whitney. Harder to directly counter and much more tedious to beat by just grinding.
I don't think Pokemon is a good fit for this list in general. Even the most difficult parts are just not that difficult. Everything is designed so that it can be reasonably beaten by an 8-year old.I don't think your last sentence here is quite true (unless you only mean required bosses) but I agree that it's a bad fit for this list.
How am I the first person to answer Air Man?
I was considering Matador for a bit simply because it was the trope picture for That One Boss for a while.

Ruby Weapon
I understand the argument that Whitney is not actually THAT hard in the grand scheme of things, but to me her infamy and longevity kinda pushed her to the forefront.Yeah, I sorta agree. Like, personally, I'd put the Drakengard 3 Route D Final Boss on this list no questions asked.... except idk if Drakengard 3 itself is known/infamous enough to justify it.
Drakengard 3 whatever boss has the Final Song and invisible notes

Sans (Undertale)
Whitney (Pokmon GSC)
Rugal (King of Fighters 94)
Mike Tyson (Mike Tysons Punch-Out)
Seymour Flux (FFX)
Malenia (Elden Ring)
Mike Tyson (Mike Tysons Punch-Out!!)
Lingering Will (Kingdom Hearts II)
Sans (Undertale)
I know it's optional and a superboss but my KH pick would probably be Mysterious Figure (BBS) just for how ridiculous that fight is lolas i read this Dark Impetus was playing on shuffle lmao
Malenia (Elden Ring)Sephiroth (Kingdom Hearts)
Sans (Undertale)
Absolute Virtue (Final Fantasy XI)
I'll get back to this last one later, but I am on side "it makes sense to combine hamburger with cheeseburger"
Did not play Elden Ring, but I trust that a lot of bosses from these games would make at least some sense for this sort of thing. And the memes only seal the deal for this one.
Thank you hombad for reminding me of the travesty that is Absolute Virtue. It may not be the biggest hard FF boss in terms of notoriety but it sure takes the what the fuck cake to me.
I stubbornly refuse to vote Whitney, but if I chose her I'd pick original G/S/C specifically, because Heracross is a pretty good counter in the gen 4 versions.
I was thinking bout the whole Whitney argument and I honestly like the idea of a character from a game that's "for/accessible to" kids and from my childhood and settled for the big Seph. No clue if my ass would still be trounced if I revisited him though ... Probably
I must be the only person who watched a video of Drakengard 3, and kinda shrugged and went "eh, so?"there's just so much going on there that you kind of have to play to fully realize
