Emerald Weapon (Final Fantasy VII)
Mike Tyson (Punch-Out)
Death (Castlevania 1)
Yellow Devil (Mega Man)

Although honestly I think Ruby is harder than Emerald... BUT maybe Emerald is more memorable due to it sneaking up on you, and due to the timer, and therefore more deserving of a rushmore seat.

I remember Ruby being harder for me.
O P E R A T I O N O U S T : Nominate SHEIK!

Ornstein and Smaugh (Dark Souls)
Mike Tyson (Punch-Out)
Yellow Devil (Mega Man)
Emerald Weapon (FFVII)

Just on principle I can't vote for the Pokmon bosses that are fairly easy if you have any kind of specific preparation, and not to brag but I beat Sephiroth Kingdom Hearts in like 3 tries so I'm going with the Weapon for a bonus boss rep.

Honorable mention to Nightmare King Grimm

Nominate: hardest (or maybe most annoying) regular enemy in a video game
"You're childish. What are you getting? Are you getting strawberry? Ha! That's such a childish flavor, only children eat strawberry."
I think the thing with Whitney is that there are way harder bosses in Pokemon. Cynthia, Volo, Ultra Necrozma, those two Furfrou on Route 6 in XY, etc.
:)
Ill second Matador

fuck that dude
(|| ' ' ||) When have you ever seen three big, very smooth arcs
. /|_|\ of hair sticking out of a person's forehead? I haven't!
I will say that I feel like there's an ... okay argument for Whitney, if only because having an actual type advantage at that point of the game would be hard.

That being said I would personally choose Ultra Necrozma or Cynthia over her on my Rushmore, if I were to use my fourth slot on a Pokemon character. Though thinking it over Cynthia makes WAY more sense to me. She's got that meme factor that Whitney has but I think she's altogether more challenging.
I was considering Matador for a bit simply because it was the trope picture for That One Boss for a while.
It's tempting to linger in this moment, while every possibility still exists. But unless collapsed by an observer, they will never be more than possibilities.

Ornstein & Smough are THE iconic difficult Soulsborne boss if you ask me. The contrasting fighting styles, the relentless pressure, the mid-fight transformation popularizing the concept of multi-phase boss fights, being the halfway-point skill check roadblock for the game. A perfect combination of difficulty and thematic weight. I think you don't get a future fight as challenging as Malenia without them.
Yeah, agreed with Ornstein & Smough as feeling like the iconic Soulsborne choice.

I actually think I might go with Isshin (Sekiro) before Malenia but that's probably just a me thing + giving Isshin bonus points for being a required and final boss (in most routes) while Malenia is optional.

Not sure I'll have a list for this honestly, would have to think. Whitney seems like a pretty good pick though.

Even in the same game Red is much, much harder than Whitney. Harder to directly counter and much more tedious to beat by just grinding.

I don't think Pokemon is a good fit for this list in general. Even the most difficult parts are just not that difficult. Everything is designed so that it can be reasonably beaten by an 8-year old.
It's Reyn Time.
Kerafyrm the Sleeper (Everquest)
Akuma (Street Fighter II)
Mike Tyson (Punch-Out!!)
Lou (Guitar Hero 3)

Lou, aka The Devil Went Down to Georgia, isn't necessarily the hardest boss of all time. It's not even the hardest song in the game. But it is renowned.

The Sleeper is legendary as far as unkillable bosses goes. It has a very unique, specific mythos in EverQuest culture.
Only the exceptions can be exceptional.
Melania (Elden Ring)
Sans - (Undertale)
Whitney - (Pokmon GSC)
Air Man (Mega Man 2)

I don't think your last sentence here is quite true (unless you only mean required bosses) but I agree that it's a bad fit for this list.

I did consider him, but I didn't think the song was enough to actually vote for him

I feel like that's precisely why he belongs. And he's not an end game boss or even a super boss. He's a required early game boss that will stomp your face in.

Flandre Scarlet (Touhou: The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil)

For hard boss fights I just have an image of those Touhou boss fights with the screen filled with shit that's gonna kill you.

Sans - Undertale
Sephiroth - KH I
Absolute Virtue - FFXI
Whitney - Pokemon GSC

I understand the argument that Whitney is not actually THAT hard in the grand scheme of things, but to me her infamy and longevity kinda pushed her to the forefront.
God has heard my soul.

Malenia - Elden Ring
Mike Tyson - Punch-Out
The Matador - SMT: Nocturne
Sephiroth - Kingdom Hearts 1 [Feel slightly weird about this as its an optional fight, but it's probably the (non-MMO) fight I've discussed most in person.]
We are living our lives
Abound with so much information
Malenia is also optional tbf.

I played Pokemon GSC more than a dozen times
I have never, ever, whatsoever had any problems with Whitney
But maybe that's because I always play solo starter so by the time I reach her it's extremely overleveled (might even be a 3rd stage evolution but idk)

Yeah, I sorta agree. Like, personally, I'd put the Drakengard 3 Route D Final Boss on this list no questions asked.... except idk if Drakengard 3 itself is known/infamous enough to justify it.

I have no idea what is even in this Pokmon boss fight being mentioned and I'm 99% sure I've never lost to it with 0 prep for it which is probably a sign it's a terrible nomination for reasons outside of the obvious "what is Pokmon doing in a discussion of difficulty" reason.
No problem!

Rugal (King of Fighters 94)
Mike Tyson (Mike Tysons Punch-Out)

Remove Whitney
Remove Mike Tyson
Add Ornstein and Smaug (Dark Souls)
Add Riku 2 (Kingdom Hearts)

Fair points on Pokmon. A Dark Souls rep should be on there and I like Ornstein/Smaug more for being a mandatory fight.

I still think there should be a mandatory tough fight in otherwise easy series and I think Riku 2 best fits that. Doubly bad because you cant skip cutscenes in the original game so you had to see that cutscene many times.

With my head and my heart in the clouds
I just think Whitney doesn't really reach outside the scope of "people who are really into Pokemon" despite the talk of how much talk she supposedly gets. I honestly think Red is a better nomination, and although he probably shouldnt be here either I at least mostly remember his team and it being surprisingly formidable.

Most other nominations here getting traction I would say people potentially could have heard of if they're not super into the games. I personally have never played KoF 94, or enough of a Souls game to get to any bosses, or more than a small bit of Undertale, but have heard of these bosses at least.
No problem!

I'll add Riku 2 here because I remember being stuck on it as a kid

I will also add Seymour Flux, I still overlevel and overprepare for that fight now so I can 1-shot it

I know it's optional and a superboss but my KH pick would probably be Mysterious Figure (BBS) just for how ridiculous that fight is lol

I'll get back to this last one later, but I am on side "it makes sense to combine hamburger with cheeseburger"

Did not play Elden Ring, but I trust that a lot of bosses from these games would make at least some sense for this sort of thing. And the memes only seal the deal for this one.

Thank you hombad for reminding me of the travesty that is Absolute Virtue. It may not be the biggest hard FF boss in terms of notoriety but it sure takes the what the fuck cake to me.

I stubbornly refuse to vote Whitney, but if I chose her I'd pick original G/S/C specifically, because Heracross is a pretty good counter in the gen 4 versions.
Sephiroth (Kingdom Hearts)

I decided on a fourth.

I was thinking bout the whole Whitney argument and I honestly like the idea of a character from a game that's "for/accessible to" kids and from my childhood and settled for the big Seph. No clue if my ass would still be trounced if I revisited him though ... Probably
Change Lingering Will to Sephiroth (KH), yeah. Specifically the KH1 version.

I wouldn't say KH is on the whole an "easy" series, especially on the higher difficulty levels. Not to the degree of Pokemon or Kirby or what have you, anyway.

there's just so much going on there that you kind of have to play to fully realize

That fucking camera going nuts towards the end, the timing, that you die if you miss even one note, that the game's performance is kinda shit so you might just drop framerate even if you don't need the camera and are musically inclined enough to simply respond to the music you can still be fucked. that last fucking note .

I mean, if you want to argue there's a difference between "difficult" boss fights and "bullshit" ones I hear you. To use KH again, I think Lingering Will is generally a fair fight - just very tough. While Mysterious Figure is just some straight-up bullshit. But eh.
