...outside of Japan, I mean. It's the first time we got some DQM goodness in a long time, and the advertising has not been... great, so spread the word. It's out now. And there's a free demo if you simply want to just check it out first.

Let's let them know there's still demand for this franchise in the West! The DQM series is among the best in monster collecting RPGs, so it's worth trying out if you never have before!

The last time I played a DQM game, I was working third shift for the county. I don't know if it would have the same appeal now that it did back when I was babysitting an archaic mainframe at 3 AM.
I did NOT know about this. Thanks for sharing!
only less than nothing, as nothing could have equaled you

I really liked the Gameboy games but I did not like Joker at all. Will need to look into this a bit first.

This is more like Joker than the game boy games unfortunately. Even the remakes of the game boy games were more like Joker. Don't know why they think the Joker system is so good. I'm still going to play this though because I care about it as a Dragon Quest 4 spinoff, a game I deeply treasure

I was aware

but I played Joker and didn't care for it and haven't played any since then

I decided to replay DWM a month ago since it's one of my favourite games of all time and I decided hey, you know what, I'm gonna play the DQ games this was based on so I actually know all these monsters thist ime. I've never actually played a mainline DQ game before

So I started from DQ1. I've gotten through to DQ4 and I'm just past the intro to chapter 5

I just noticed this game came out so I bought it and played the intro.... my characters name is Psaro....

I think I might go beat DQ4 before playing this.

This literally just came out right? I tried buying it in Japan last week but apparently it didn't release before I left on the 24th
it released today the 1st of December

its weird that theres little nothing about this on the internet anywhere

even dq treasures got more spot light than this
I'm the original TomNook7 from the old days. The other guy is just TomNook. Know your TomNooks.
I'm still wondering what the exclusivity on this game (and Treasures still) is

Treasures got that stealth Steam release 7 months after release and I wonder if the same thing will happen here.

Also still wondering if Treasures will make its way to Playstation at some point or not

I just wanna play that Good-Feel Goemon successor

I didn't like Joker either.

But Joker 2 was a massive improvement!

it feels like a mix between joker and the originals. I like it a whole lot and I don't love Joker (though I don't dislike it like some)

If you didn't pick it up yet, apparently Best Buy is B2G1 on all Switch games.
Oh wait is this a Nintendo voucher game? I still have one of those to blow

I've heard that this runs like doodoo on Switch so I'll just wait for the inevitable PS5 or PC version.

On one hand, DQM has generally been Nintendo-exclusive, but on the other hand, Square isn't keeping anything as Switch-exclusive anymore (Mario RPG not withstanding lol), so I think a Steam port is probably likely.

Change is weird.
Yeah considering LIVE A LIVE even got a PC port I think anything is fair game for Square and Nintendo games.

How do they play and what's the difference between DQM and DQM Joker for someone who knows basically nothing about the franchise

Pokemonlikes

DWM was 2D, had more procedural/infinite level design. (I prefer this)
To tame monsters, you feed them meat in battle and maybe they'll join after you win.
Monsters inherit moves from their parents, and have three each for their own species.
Breeding is focused around the family (type) of monster, and has a lot of different combinations that will get you different monsters than you might expect. (I vastly prefer this)
DWM's translation was a bit more normal (I vastly prefer this)

DQM:J is 3D, attempts a bit more plot, and is all pre-made.
To tame monsters, you burn a turn to hit them in a special way where the harder you hit the better your chances.
Monsters have skill trees to invest in to learn moves and other perks- they get a couple innately, but you can replace them with inherited ones. (I prefer this)
Breeding is focused around the tier (rarity) of monster, with fewer combinations that break from the "default" results. There's an increase in palette swaps.
DQM:J is more like the modern DQ translations where everybody speaks in heavy UK dialects.

An hour in, this looks more like the latter, except you can recruit monsters by both the meat and the intimidation methods. Haven't gotten to breed yet tho.

I'll take pretty much any game in the series over its contemporary Pokemon games, even if I miss the good ol' days.

I'd argue DQM is closer to SMT/Persona than Pokemon. The whole point is to constantly fuse your monsters together to make stronger ones. The (up to) 4 on 4 combat is also closer to those games as well. A few of the Digimon games like Cyber Sleuth or Dusk/Dawn also work as a better comparison than Pokemon.
Change is weird.
Cyber Sleuth is an extremely apt comparison to the older DQM games.

I didn't realize those first 2 games got a PS1 remake in Japan, kind of want to look into that.

Still bonkers to me there are no (non-Famitsu) professional reviews. This happened with Digimon Survive and I can't think of anything else released by a major publisher. I wonder if anyone will even bother after the fact.

put me in the 'dialects usually take away more than they add' camp. it usually makes it feel more awkward to parse what the characters are saying. anyway, if this really runs so bad on switch, I might wait a while and see if it does get a PC release instead.

got to the credits, really enjoyed it, 9/10. the plot was ??? but thats never really been a concern in these

did some of the postgame, but might move onto other games unless theres more to it. maybe the dungeon DLC would help? i bothered with the random postgame dungeons in DQ9 for a while, maybe theyd be fun here too

going back to normal dragon quest after one of these games is so tough because your team comps are so much more static. like I was thinking of replaying DQ4 but Im not sure I can be bothered at the moment

Nice to hear it's at least pretty fun

I finally beat DQ4. Maybe I'll do a write up at some point of my thoughts of the DQ series as a whole (as well as FF as I recently played 1-10 there as well), but my feeling has not been good about DQ. DQ1&2 were way below FF1, with DQ3 finally getting there, and I only thought FF1 was a basic 5/10. But boy I really liked DQ4. This game will sit with me.

I'm just diving into DQ5 on my emulator, I'll probably start DQM Dark Prince on my switch in a couple weeks when I go home over christmas for a week and a half. It's really cute in DQ5 how the first bit of the game your hero is a child and you go off and have little adventures while your dad isn't looking.... they got really creative with this series really fast in a way I did not think they would after the first three games.

I mean, as a huge DQ fan I say this tracks fairly accurately though. It should be noted the first three DQ games pre-date Final Fantasy 1, so they are a step behind by default. As one of the first JRPGs ever made they had some growing pains that other series had time to learn and benefit from.

DQ1 I personally like *because* it's so simplistic, though. It's like playing a early 2000s browser game, and it's short. DQ2 gets it the worst however, since it's more "advanced" than DQ1, but is still really early on in gaming history, so it comes off as not good at anything. It's easily the worst in the series.

DQ3 is where things start getting good though, with its simple but solid dungeon crawling adventure. DQ4 is the first game that feels like what a "regular" JRPG would be and the series as a whole solidifies its direction from that point on. DQ5 might be the best in the franchise, with it being well-designed, beloved by fans, and the creator's own favorite entry.

I also would be interested in write ups you have, particularly of these later games.

it's good enough I keep forgetting it's not still called DWM

what in tarnation is this story though, it feels like they wanted to write a book instead but had to cram everything into cutscenes, so you have all these story beats that would probably be dramatic if set up properly, but instead it's like "wait who's that again?". But my main gripe is all this (I just did Zenithia) railroading into being evil(?). "Do you want to fulfill your mother's dying wish and save the world? or do you want to piss off all the monsters, declare war on the humans, and continue obsessing over revenge? " >let's do the heroic thing "you're lying wow how could you, jerk"

some of the railroading in this game is pretty incredible, one of them in particular at the end of the middle echelons was so brazen I was cracking up

It's funny because your slower monsters will "cheat" and change up their tactics for some things, like when a spellcaster goes last and uses a weak physical attack to finish off a weakened enemy, but it won't adjust to stuff like Bounce.
Change is weird.
