I finally beat DQ4. Maybe I'll do a write up at some point of my thoughts of the DQ series as a whole (as well as FF as I recently played 1-10 there as well), but my feeling has not been good about DQ. DQ1&2 were way below FF1, with DQ3 finally getting there, and I only thought FF1 was a basic 5/10. But boy I really liked DQ4. This game will sit with me.
I mean, as a huge DQ fan I say this tracks fairly accurately though. It should be noted the first three DQ games pre-date Final Fantasy 1, so they are a step behind by default. As one of the first JRPGs ever made they had some growing pains that other series had time to learn and benefit from.

DQ1 I personally like *because* it's so simplistic, though. It's like playing a early 2000s browser game, and it's short. DQ2 gets it the worst however, since it's more "advanced" than DQ1, but is still really early on in gaming history, so it comes off as not good at anything. It's easily the worst in the series.

DQ3 is where things start getting good though, with its simple but solid dungeon crawling adventure. DQ4 is the first game that feels like what a "regular" JRPG would be and the series as a whole solidifies its direction from that point on. DQ5 might be the best in the franchise, with it being well-designed, beloved by fans, and the creator's own favorite entry.

I also would be interested in write ups you have, particularly of these later games.
Okay, I rolled a 14. What's that mean? Hsu
