Went into a narrow street by accident. I got over to let a car pass and unfortunately got to close to a mailbox and knocked it over with the mirror.

I told the lady I'd fix it. She called Police. Fair, next. She wanted me arrested for the damages to the mailbox screaming I ran from them and was driving drunk. The frame was still intact, the box was knocked over but wasn't even dented. She demanded it be reported to my auto insurance. One of the Cops told me it was a simple accident and a quick fix. No real harm done. I just pay her and be on my way. She was finally convinced to let me pay.

She called me up today saying I would owe them $2000. I told her to go to hell as I know that's BS. She said she was quoted at $1500. I told her she's either a moron or thinks I'm one. Now she's going to take me to court. I will pay but not $2000. If she thinks I will pay $2000 she's crazy. She claims the entire thing was ruined and had to be rebuilt from ground up. New cement, new pole, new box.

Guess I gotta take it to court.

Start by getting the final copy of the police report, and make sure that the initial settlement you paid to her is stated on the report as that will work against her claim. Unless it was a brick mailbox, they're barely worth even $200 at a home improvement store (box, post, and cement). I suggest getting your own estimate to present to the judge as her estimate is likely either fraudulent or the contractor thinks she's foolish enough to not question the quote.

This reminds me when a person rear ended my dads car. My dad, trying to be a nice guy, decided not to report it because the damage was so minimal and decided to just part ways with the other guy not even asking the other person to pay for any "damages". A year later, the other guy tries to sue us for $100k plus damages because supposedly it was my dad that backed up his car and caused him to have spinal damages. It took about 3 years before the asshole dropped the charges against my dad.

Yeah I was slow and just winged it with my mirror. My mirror wasn't even really damaged. I don't know why she was flipping out over it. She was going crazy wanting me arrested.

Maybe if it were a brick mailbox. A standard post and box installation with all-new materials would cost about $300. Repairing the existing mailbox would be closer to $100. This old bat's quote of $1500 and then demanding $2000 means she is most likely not installing like for like (fraudulent as it's not representative of the actual damages).

Thats nothing. My neighbor threatened to sic her lawyer on us because she got cited for an unpermitted structure that violated code. It caused her stress to have to remove it. Uh, okay?

Oh, and she told the whole neighborhood that were horrible people. Uh, okay?

Dont most judges tend to employ some common sense

like they would look at this lady, frothing at the mouth and jumping for joy at the idea of suing someone who already said theyd pay I dont think a judge is going to think highly of them
