It is neat isn't it. Thematically it's super weird this guy makes kids dig through a bunch of trash cans.

Functionally it's also horrifically broken. Like the puzzle does not work at all the way it's supposed to in the original game. Yellow fixed it slightly but it's still broken.

Well we can look at FRLG, etc. to see it working the way it's intended. It's supposed to work that the first switch is in a random trashcan, and the second switch is an adjacent trashcan to the first one.

Instead, the first switch is in one of a few specific trashcans. The second one is supposed to be adjacent but it's bugged to just be the top-leftmost trashcan in the room a lot of the time and even when it's not the top-leftmost one it doesn't correctly select from the adjacent ones either. This also means sometimes the first and second switches are both in the top-left trashcan.

According to in-game text, he was actually in the American Army. Other text says he was a pilot, which makes me think Air Force? Though, in Japanese, his rank is Major, apparently.

His title, even in Japanese occasionally, is The Lightning American.

I'm guessing "America" in this context refers to the continent Unova's a part of. Assuming geography and everything is the same as our world. A character from B2W2 even asks if he's from Unova because of this. And the Unova games mentioned being at war at some point in the past, so it's probably that war that Surge was a soldier in.

My headcannon is that Surge bought a bunch of trash cans on clearance, his wife nagged him about it asking why the hell they need so many trash cans.

So out of spite he forces them to be used at his gym no matter what, pretending it's a vital use, rather than admit his wife was right.

Dude is a military veteran who spends all day hanging out in a building while grossly underqualified children wander in off the street and demand to challenge him in battle.
