Kinda surprised this is allowed. Not because I find it personally offensive or think it should be banned, just seems like it'd be a thing in an automated system to auto flag and not allow to avoid 'controversy'

I wouldn't avoid the price but I'd avoid that specific soda. I miss Sierra Mist. Starry is not the same.

Eh, I prefer it to canned Sprite.

don't worry, the commissary surcharge will push it out of evil's grasp.

For about 4 months several years ago 1 pack of Marlboro Lights came to $6.66 after tax...I did take that as an omen lol.

No, I wouldn't specifically avoid that price if I felt it was worth it. But that's way too much for a fucking 12 pack of soda

while they're obviously overcharging, my understanding of why canned soda costs so much is that there's an aluminum shortage.

To let you know, a 12pk in Cali can cost $11. In cheaper stores it'll cost around $5, but it's pretty common to be about $7.
6 dollars for 12 cans is a pretty cheap price for soda, I think.
Why not go all in?

ALL soda is sold at a ridiculous markup. That's why you can buy a 2 liter at a grocery store for less than a 20oz at a convenience store. It's the reason fast food restaurants offered free refills for so long, and also the reason they sell you a burger for what seems like a "discount" and then ask you if you want to buy a $3-4 soda.

I've been looking into getting a soda fountain at work and a 5 gallon bag of Coke syrup is ~$110. Those 5 gallons turn into a little more than 8000 8 ounce servings.

Yeah, post mix soda taps are ludicrously cheap.

Ive never seen that particular soda before, but a 24 pack of coke can be had for around 150,000 VND without any special promotions, which equates to less than 6 dollars.

I know, just that the increase in canned soda price isn't just because the market is willing to pay.

Though a markup of 200+% is believable, because these 12 packs regularly go on sale at this same store for $3.50. which i guess is either the price the store bought them at from the distributor or still has a small markup, unless they're eating some cost to invoke "wow what a great deal! I'll be more than I came in for"

That's a nice price. 8 dollars(204,360 VND) is about the cheapest you'll find a 24pk, but that's only on sale.
When I worked at DQ years ago this family came in, their order totalled $6.66. They then bought one more item to not end up with that number.
I only appear to be out of line because I am the only one who is in line.

I agree it's too high, but wouldn't it make sense that it at least costs more than the cost to make?

usually markups are negligible or something like 15-25%

Soda markups are astronomical in comparison to the cost.

There's a reason nearly every restaurant charges $3.50 for a soda, it anchors the price of other menu items.

supplier to seller markups are far higher than 15-25%

I worked in a grocery store deli 10 years ago and saw one of our invoices. the meats we sold for $8-12/pound only cost us $3-5. All the rest of that price is labor and supplies, plus profit

The unit price is wrong. A 12-pack selling for $6.66 does not break down to 4.6 per can.

It's 55.5 per can.

How much is the gas for those? I'm sure you still come out ahead, even with average maintenance on everything too. I don't think we ever needed maintenance on the fountains at the places I've worked, but we would clean the dispenser nozzle things daily and obviously change out the syrup when it was low.

Unit price here is by ounce.

Which can be more useful in some cases, but for cans of soda... Not so much

you mean the rack for the boxes and compressor? usually those are free from whatever vendor as long as you buy the product from them. I've had them at other buildings and we had someone from the company come and flush all the lines every 3-6 months, but other than that and sanitizing the nozzles daily there wasn't much maintenance involved.

You don't actually have to pay for compressed air or anything, since the machine just makes it on its own. the only cost is the electricity to run it.

Correct. We added 30% on anything we bought to sell. Our beef and pecans were excluded from that since it was money we put out. Pecans were 1 time cost for the harvester(10k), diesel, electricity to run the cracker/sheller machines(1 time cost of 10k). Labor and packaging(me mostly)
