I tried to offer up a wide range of options in the poll. If nothing seems to align with your personal feelings on the matter, then refrain from voting, and share your opinion in a comment below instead!

The Poll Options:

  • Yes, suspensions should last forever.
  • Leaning towards YES, while the thought of having suspensions from the modern day following to my grave might seem unsettling, so long as you don't break the rules
  • Leaning towards YES, there is rampant abuse by trolls who lie low waiting for their history to purge, there needs to be a higher level of accountability initiated.
  • Kind of, so long as suspensions are reserved for significant violations, and suspensions aren't used as a form of stacked punishment.
  • Kind of, so long as suspensions are reserved for significant suspensions, and existing suspensions currently within a user's history purge at their previously agreed upon time.
  • Not really, while I agree that certain violations should carry more weight than they currently do, I still believe that users should be rewarded for good behavior.
  • Not really, while I agree the system can be milked, I still think the system should be based around reformation, and getting users back into the general populace as good standing community members
  • Leaning towards NO, community members should be given an equal opportunity to purge their moderation history via good behavior over time; this seems like it will drive people towards alt accounts
  • Leaning towards NO, keeping an active historical archival of one's posting history seems like overkill; can you imagine having suspensions from 20 years ago still showing up in your mod history?

So if you get suspended, it's a permanent mark? And how does that impact how mods treat you in the future? What if someone is suspended one time and then 5 years later after perfect behavior, they get modded. Is their account at risk because of a 5 year old suspension?

but option 4 would be my second choice.

I think its a good idea in theory. I just think the execution is off. A lot of the current suspensions users have are culimative in nature.

Meaning, that on their own merit they didnt warrant suspension, the infraction was only upgraded to a suspension due to poor moderation history.

Thats not even a malicious thing, its just how the moderation team was instructed to moderate under the old guard or so I assume. Ive always been strongly against culiminative suspensions, as I believe it kills engagement by forcing otherwise harmless users to stop using the platform.

DToast in his brief explanation on the suggestion board seems to suggest that hes trying to change the culmination of damage approach to moderation in exchange for suspensions to be directly related to serious and significant TOS violations.

In that regard I support it. I think its a good idea. In execution, well see.

This is fine, I've had a gfaqs account for over 20 years and I've only been warned once, never anything more severe than that.
As the morning sun rises, my lingering memories fade. I no longer see your silhouette. It's too far gone into the haze.

I know I went about 19 years without ever even getting a suspension, then due to apparently spoiling a film that had just released I was given one.

The point is that once you do get one, its hard to come back from them, because you kind of get stuck in a loop where now that because you have a suspension on your record, what would have previously been a no karma loss deletion will now be upgraded to an additional suspension.

The only way out (besides stopping posting for a while) was via permanently changing your posting habits, which in essence is being rewarded for good behavior

Now it seems that good behavior will no longer be rewarded, because too many people were just posting on alts until their mains got back into good standing?

This is an interesting direction to take this, because the moderation system was designed 24 years ago with reformation and rehabilitation as its goal to keep users active, and the site healthy.

Nope, it was 8SaintWanderer, actually. I got Warned for repeatedly misspelling their name in a manner meant to mock and belittle them despite being told to knock it off by the same moderator who had already given them a warning for similarly disrespectful behavior.

Its all right though, as I ultimately learned from my mistake and have basically ignored their presence on the board even if theyre technically not on my ignore list.

But if suspensions are going to be stuck on your record for the rest of your life, they 100% need to be accompanied by moderator notes explaining why.

I have a suspension from last September where to this very day I have no idea why it was even moderated, no less why I was suspended for it.

I have to imagine that if thats stuck with me for the rest of my life, then future moderators looking at that are probably going to have just as much trouble trying to decipher it as I do.

Especially if its like twenty years into the future and Im being moderated by some person thats 32, and would have been 12 at the date of my actual suspension.

yes. but it's nothing to worry about until you see 6 month purgatory. it's when we're all walking on thin ice and can fall through at any time for any reason.

Me too. Went 19 years until my first suspension, but once youre in the system you cant get out of it. Something that would have been a 3KL is now another suspension.

Because that sounds like rehabilitation to me, which is the point of the moderation system.

It's not really "behaving" for a lot of them so much as hiding. Their mentality is unchanged, they just post on an alt or post on a board where they know they won't get modded. Then they do the exact same thing they did before.

Permanent consequences for getting suspended/purgatory... I have mixed feeling.

On the one hand, it's a burn that won't stop burning for frequent troublemakers. That fear will never go away, and frankly it's a well earned feeling of misery for them.

...On the other hand, it's also unnecessarily harsh even for my taste. It really should be on a case by case business if that sort of thing should perma stick.

But like if it becomes relevant, are you a frequent troublemaker in the first place? It's hard to believe someone's getting suspended constantly and isn't being a shitter in some way.

A suspension/purgatory was sticking for up to 2 years.

But the bs is once more how they changed it.

There was no annoncement.
There was no update within the rules.
There was nothing.

They just changed their policy internally without saying anything at all, and only after getting asked "hey, this suspension should have been removed by now" they said "oh, yeah, well, nope, we just forgot to update the document there".

Meanwhile DToast goes "But we did talk about it in the last Announcement!" yet can't say where and when and what is supposed to imply "suspensions are now here forever".

The system was already designed to cause a feedback loop that was easily exploited by other users.

Now that this feature has been extended in perpetuity; you're essentially going to have different classes of users, where two people with a different amount of suspensions can now perform the same actions and get two different results... forever. It basicslly means your account can never be in good standing.

Theres zero upside to this. I've actually given some grace to some of the Fandom stuff whilst being mostly indifferent to it but this is a terrible plan.

I assume you can dispute a suspension, but I wouldn't know since I follow the rules.

They should cut down on alts. But the users that have alts shouldnt be allowed to completely change the moderation system like its not designed to just punish users that people dont like, its designed to help guide users to change up their posting habits, and become positive members of the community.

Its why Ive been preaching that mod notes should be required, not optional. Without mod notes its not guaranteed that the system is doing as it was designed. If the user moderates had no idea why theyre moderated then the system is just being used for punishment and not reformation which is technically mod abuse as defined by CJayC back in the day.

Find a way to crack down on the users that keep on making alt accounts, or coming back under new accounts once banned. But taking empthasis off of user rehabilitation by keeping a longtime users stuck in a suspension loop for the rest of their days is beyond counterintuitive.

I find its the opposite. Because once you mess up just one time, all the little things that would usually go unmoderated are now being upgraded to suspensions due to having a previous suspension on your record.

Like I got suspended for making a topic on the Martial Arts board asking who would win in a UFC fight between Mark Zuckerberg & CM Punk like, if you think thats a troll topic, then whatever, but theres no justification for that to be a suspension on its own merit.

I was even told that it probably would have been a delete without karma loss, but it resulted in a suspension because I had one on my record already. That happens a lot.

Man, this is the doing of those idiots on Reddit. They harassed the people on this site (notably the admins as well) to the point where the mods are paranoid that they might be using the site, that keeping them off of it is all they care about.

Like the mods should be worried about increasing engagement, and ensuring everyone is playing nice and getting along, but their so shell shocked from those dozen or so idiots constantly harassing them that theyre instead just hyper focused on KOS Lists, and Permanent Suspension Loops.
