I study law and just finished my last tests and am graduating and am now just waiting to take the bar. I also just finished my last internship. Therefore, I have over 2 months of absolutely no responsibilities at all aside from studying for the bar in July so I'm trying to get into better shape.

Starting at 245 pounds and I went to the gym for the first time in years. Stayed for 50 minutes and burned 400 calories according to the machines. Also I don't eat breakfast usually and had a 400 calorie lunch so I am at a net 0 calories consumed for the day and will remain that until dinner time.

I don't think anyone cares but I'm just posting this publicly because if it's public it puts pressure on me to not cheat and skip gym days lol.

The best way to stay consistent at the gym is to treat it like a regular, normal thing that you do. Treat it like taking a shower or something similar.

I love the cold weather haha. The summer is the worst time.

Although I am confused as to what is a good workout length. Idk if 50 mins is even a good amount of time. Most of that was on a moderate incline treadmill at a little over 3mph. Do people really work out for two hours a day? Or is it mostly shorter times? I saw plenty of people in th gym and I feel like I came in and left pretty quick but it really was 50 mins.

Back from the gym on the second day.

300 calories and over 1 mile walked on the treadmill on about 2/3rds the max incline.
Misc. weight machines for like 15 mins

I don't know what the machine is called, but it's the one where you sit and lean back and your back is what pulls the weights up. I realized I can already almost max out the machine's weights. Maybe I'm not using the machine right but that's cool lol.

Some people maybe. Half the time the people there that long are not working out and are only talking. Weightlifting should be like 45 minutes max.

If you want to get a really good workout in, if your gym has a stair climber its the way to go. I've worked up to doing about 20-30 minutes a day on level 10 and I feel amazing now.

I skipped yesterday because I had to go to a ceremony and there really was no time at all.

Back at it today. Did another workout for about 50 mins. 150 cals on treadmill, 100 on bike. Then I did some weight machines for like 15 mins.

Had to go run an errand then went back to the gym again and did like another 15 mins. Did another 150 on the treadmill.

Hopefully thats enough for one day. My arms are sore as hell tho lol

You have to lift weights too. Just cardio isn't going to give immediate results.

What are your goals? Also cardio machines overestimate calorie loss by a decent margin. You should try to get to zone 2 for fat loss.
How quaint.

This. The results wont be immediate, but they will come. And it can be hard to notice your own progress because youre looking at yourself every day. The changes are fluid to you. To others, you will suddenly start getting the Have you been working out? comments.

But yeah, incorporate weights into your workout. You dont need to be lifting super heavy stuff just enough to tone. Its honestly easier than cardio, IMO. The muscle raises your metabolism and helps jumpstart the process.

Good luck, and keep at it. If you know anyone who can go to the gym with you, all the better. When you go with someone, it keeps the accountability in place.

I didn't really have a goal in mind, but I guess getting down to 220 would be a good place to start. That's 25 pounds from where I started. Also I weighed myself this morning and I am at just under 240. Like 239.5. So that's cool, but I bet that's all water weight.

I have been easing into lifting weights. My arms are sore as hell but I'll probably do a bit more weights today. Also my friend says carbs before the gym is good so I just downed a bagel and I'm going back to the gym in a little bit.

Did mainly weights today. Not actual weights, the resistance machines.

After doing that, I took a break and used the massage chair for 10 minutes. Tried to go back and do more weights but my body told me nahhhhhh don't do that. I could barely do what I was doing before so I thought my body had had enough. Went to the grocery store and bought some chicken wings lol.

Man, working out makes you hungry.

Biden is the greatest President ever.
Just had the best workout yet. I decided to redownload Yugioh on my phone and play that on the treadmill since I play decks that don't require a lot of input on my part and I can kinda just watch the duel and play a few cards here and there. I was hoping it would distract me and it totally worked.

450 calories burned on the treadmill
125 calories burned on the bike
about 50 reps on various weight machines

Even if the machines overestimate the calories burned a little bit, I spent about an hour of excercising not including any breaks I took. I used the massage chairs I had access to and could have worked out more but my phone was dying and didnt want to overwork myself. Today was a good day tho lol

In my experience they roughly double the value. But, if you're mindful with portion control and food intake, and you're active enough, it all comes together at the end anyways.

What's important is being consistent and habitual. Keep it up <3

I've read it's up to 30% overestimate. It's more about the quality of the cardio that determines the weight loss vs the time on it. You gotta be in zone 2 for fat burning.
How quaint.
Someone explain zones to me because I have no idea what that means lol.

but yeah I had about the same amount of working out today as yesterday. I just did a straight hour on the treadmill at like 2.3 mph on a middle incline. Says I burned 612 calories and climbed 999 feet.

and my usual meal lately has just been grilled chicken with fried onions and peppers. Pretty much been eating it every day

Just refers to your heart rate during the activity and what % it is of your max heart rate. To calculate max heart rate it's just 220 - your age.

Zone 1 - Very light, 5060% of max heart rate
Zone 2 - Light, 6070%
Zone 3 - Moderate, 7080%
Zone 4 - Hard, 8090%
Zone 5 - Maximum, 90100%

To burn fat you need to be at least in zone 2.
How quaint.
Ah I see. I will have to see what my heart rate is when I workout tomorrow.

Okay, went to the gym again today and did a long workout. Burned about another 600 calories I would say. I only ate 447 for lunch so I ended the afternoon with negative caloric intake. For dinner, I had a low calorie meal of two grilled chicken breast, some sauteed onions and peppers, and then half a tub of Halo Top ice cream which is AMAZINGLY good and it's low calories since half the tub is only 180 calories.

I probably ended the day eating about 1000 calories more than I burned from working out alone. But once you take into account the calories you burn naturally I think I've been doing good at maintaining a deficit in calorie intake

depends on your goals. If you wanna get a lot of muscles (hypertrophy), sets in the 5 to 12 range is fine. If you're focusing on burning calories and increasing endurance, >12 is also pretty awesome.

100 reps is probably excessive, and you can get the same thing (calories burned with muscles fatigued, with rest to promote growth and gains) done in less time. But, aiming for 100 reps isn't necessarily bad either. If you do indeed knock out 100 reps, great! Next session aim for 101 reps or go for 100 reps at 72.5 lbs or whatever.

Then you're pretty good on your current scheme! Like I said, stick with it and you'll eventually see results. Personally speaking, you'll start seeing results in the mirror at about a month and friends and family will see your progress at about the 3 month mark.

To further emphasize a point -- you burn more fat by doing a combination of diet and exercise more than diet alone. Which, you're doing, so bravo. Below study doesn't really include cardio but you're doing a good blend of cardio and weight lifting already.

Yeah, it sucks sometimes. Again, just stick with it.

Even if you weigh yourself daily at the same time (first thing in the morning, post-piss) your weight will always fluctuate like +/-2 lbs between poop and salt/carb intake and other water retention stuff (or if you were drinking the night before, for a somewhat dehydrated state).

When someone first starts a weight loss journey, they tend to cut out a lot of salt and carbs (less fast food, e.g.) which makes their weight plummet like 10 lbs over 3 weeks. Then the fun grind actually starts, and -1 lb per week is a good and healthy pace. So stalling for a few days is no big deal. It happens. It doesn't necessarily mean you need to be even more active or cut even more calories. The occasional "ratcheting" still needs to periodically occur, but not yet imo.

Just know, to me, you're better late than never again.
A few things from my very amateur experiences of working out/exercising/getting "healthy"

  1. Consistency is key. Even a low impact workout is better than no workout. If you can only get a half hour in instead of your normal 2 hours, so be it.
  2. When it comes to your weight, worry more about how you look/how your clothes fit than the actual number. My weight has fluctuated anywhere between 305 and 185 in the last 16 years, and I'll tell you, people said I looked unhealthy more at 185 than at 305.
Other than that, constantly remind yourself that you're not on a "diet". You're just changing some habits to make yourself a better person.
You gotta laugh. That is the one thing at the end of your life you will not wish you did less of.
