I wasn't aware that there was a controversy over it. Do tell. The label forced Lyric changes and forced it to be a Duet with Paul McCoy, from a band you never heard of called 12 Stones, whom Amy previously had no affiliation with, in order to boost Paul's career.
Amy Lee was supposed to be the sole vocalist on the song. But given it was their first single, the record label didn't think the song having a female vocalist would be successful, so they hired a male vocalist who wasn't even in the band, and had them turn it into a duet. It's always amazing to me just how often labels are wrong but still continue to force their own stupid ass visions on artists.
Those "wake me up!" parts that are tacked on weren't meant to be in the track

You can find the original recording off the bootleg "Not For Your Ears" but I think Amy also managed to release an official version on the Fallen rerelease. It's basically a completely different song.
The Synthesis version is more like what Amy originally intended.
They made an orchestral album featuring essentially orchestral covers of their own songs and they redid Bring Me to Life more in line with how Amy originally intended it. It's much better than the crap they released on Fallen.
