Read about this earlier. I'd bet money that this wasn't the first time the driver drove drunk and probably has at least one or more DUI charges under her belt. Drinking and driving is treated so lightly when it absolutely shouldn't be.

You hear about stuff like this too often. What surprises me is I've never heard of the parents killing themselves. I feel like that would be a high chance.

After one DUI if you do it a second time you should be banned from driving for life, I am SICK of seeing a person having 20 DUIS on their record.
Just call me Discount Dan.
Curious to find out more about the driver, weird that they didn't release a name despite planning on charging them

People with 20 DUIs on the record often also have 20 Driving While Revokeds on their record. Banning someone from driving doesn't stop them from driving

1st offense, license revocation for a year + defensive driving + mandated meeting attendance.

2nd offense (driving while revoked) - prison.

It should be after one. Seriously, why should a DUI be something where you get a warning? If you fuck up, youre done. And if youre caught driving again illegally after that, the consequence should be severe.

DUI is treated way too leniently. Even when they murder people, it's rare they get double digit years in prison, even after a long history of them.

And yes, if you (generic you, no longer replying to the above poster) choose to get drunk and get in a car and kill people, it should be a fucking murder charge. You didn't accidentally do any of that, you fucking piece of shit.

EDIT: why aren't they releasing the driver's name?! I can understand when you're not sure you have the correct suspect, not wanting to publicly shame the wrong person (ironically, seems like those are the cases the police can't put the name out fast enough). But....they have her fucking car crashed into the fucking building and she's at a party she wasn't invited to, I think the risk of her not being the perpetrator is pretty fucking low !

I used to work with a guy who had like 5 DUIs on his record and only got his license revoked for like a year with no jail time. The worst part is that he would still drive with a suspended license so I could assume he was still drinking and driving.

DUI in the US should be a one-strike and you're out policy. First time offender? Heavy fine AND lose your license for a year. Second time offender? Jail time.

yeah but if they took all the second time offenders off the road, they'd lose a source of revenue

If you are going to get drunk, do it at home. It's a simple concept that a lot of people don't seem to understand.

It shouldn't be like that though. Here in California, if you're caught without a license, your car gets impounded for 30 days. That's a hell of a deterrent for most. You lose your mode of transportation for a month, then you also have to pay $1000+ to get your car out of the lot. And if that's not enough to stop them from drinking and driving, then toss them in jail.

I do wonder why people think that.

Not defending it at all but I could see that if being drunk calms someones nerves that it'd make them feel 'more comfortable' behind the wheel and thus they may feel like a better driver.

However, the impaired reaction time that comes along with being drunk definitely outweighs any remote calming effect it may have on someone.

Then again it is more likely a bullshit excuse to justify their drunk driving. They hate being told that they can't do something they want to do so they lie through their teeth

Sounds a bit like this lady here in my county who drove drunk and killed an elderly man in a crosswalk. Her "punishment" was a $1000 fine and having to write an essay. I'm sure the fact she was an attractive lady who worked in the county law office had nothing to do with it.
Every day I wake up and promise I will be nice to everyone, then I deal with people at work and remember why that will never happen.

Some of the issues are that we live in an individualistic, car centric, and alcohol centric environments, don't have great access to healthcare, and don't have great support systems for alcoholics, and addiction is very hard to treat.

You can suspend people's licenses, but they still have to drive to get around. Suspending their license doesn't help with alcoholism and neither does being trapped at home, spending time in jail, or losing a job because you can't drive or were in jail.

We have a car dependent culture that's reluctant to punish people for crimes they commit behind the wheel for some reason and courts seem reluctant to deprive people of their cars because they know they're probably screwing that person over completely if they live in suburban Michigan or something.

Treating the underlying causes is hard and expensive, and in the meantime people have to live and also feel they should be able to do whatever they want. It's all a recipe for disaster.

None of this is to excuse people who drive under the influence. I absolutely hate them. But these are some of the reasons you get people with 10 DUIs before their license gets suspended, and then they continue to drive.

I gotta be righteous, I gotta be me, I gotta be conscious, I gotta be free, I gotta be able, I gotta attack, I gotta be stable, I gotta be black.

I do fear drunk driving as just over a week ago we have had a basketball tournament in my town and alcohol was definitely brought in. We are a dry county and for good reason

my kids now like to play out and I watched over the street several times and repeatedly told them to be very careful as there are confused drivers

sad and stressful tbh

This is one of the few times where a crime this bad is probably better off punished while they're sober and in jail thinking about what they did. Also the inmates will make sure they get punished.

From what a cop I know told me, the issue with DUIs is that they're a criminal statute so your normal traffic cop that's used to writing tickets all day for "minor" infractions will usually screw it up.
So they're typically get away with it after a lawyer gets involved.

Unfortunately he's a outlier but my best friend got 1 dui and he hasn't driven since. Which is odd cause he drove all the time before ever getting a license.

He shoulda had his license back ages ago but it happened in a state he currently does not live in and he has to go back that state to resolve it. Added problem weed is legal in his state so he smokes state it happened in its illegal and he has to do a drug test. Plus like 12 hour trip. Kinda hard to pull off when you can't legally drive

I knew a guy who had a dui dropped cause the cop let him drive away after issuing a citation for it lmao. Cop figured dude was only like a mile from home so no biggie
