Alcohol covers a surprising percentage of it-- both the "I'm too drunk to realize that this plan is stupid" and "hold my beer!" varieties.

Modern media/entertainment/social media also play a role, but aside from challenges and attempts to get selfies in dangerous/stupid situations, this is nothing new (there is a reason why "Don't try this at home" is now a major phrase and meme.)

Reminds me of how staff at a major national park (Yosemite, I think) struggled to come up with an effective bear-proof trashcan because "there is considerable overlap between the smartest bears and the dumbest tourists."
