Bob Hoskins is my spirit animal when it comes to my disdain for the original SMB Movie. It admittedly has a couple jokes that still make me chuckle (mostly from Iggy and Spike), but overall I will never accept it as having 'so-bad-it's-good' camp value.

Another funny anecdote was when Dennis Hopper's then-8-year-old son asked him why he did the SMB movie. "To buy you shoes," Hopper replied. "I didn't need shoes that badly," the kid fired back.

Hoskins and Leguizamo were basically plastered all during filming. As they should. Good lord, I can't imagine how stupid that production was for them.

The LA Times interviewed the cast during the production. The interviewer said they couldn't get a word from the directors, and Hopper said "The directors won't give interviews? That's the smartest thing I've heard from them! That's the only intelligent thing I've heard from them that they've actually done."

Honestly, I love that movie, and not even in a 'so bad it's funny' kind of way. It definitely has its flaws, but to this day I still find it to be exciting and comedic. If anything, I kind of feel John Leguizamo (who played Luigi) shined a little more in it than Hoskins.

Then again, I never really understood the whole concept of 'so bad it's funny'. Me, I either like a movie, I don't, or I just don't care for it much.
One time, CE triggered me so hard with their objectively wrong opinions that I accidentally punched myself in the balls.

Truth.

Those two made chicken salad out of chicken shit.
The setpieces kicked ass.

Would make for badass punk apocalypse Mario level of some sort, lol.

Too bad the flick itself was stank.

Yeah that movie was shit on a platter. Its not good when live action vg movies started off crummy. I've heard about the production mess and lousy incompetent directors before. Don't blame him.

Fortunately Mortal Kombat came and blew us away with how fun it was. Martial arts stuff was very popular in the 80s and 90s with stuff like Karate Kid, TMNT, Street Fighter, and Power Rangers so it was a perfect time to make the MK film.

Mario Bros could have, should have been better. With multiple games and 3 cartoons it had no excuse to turn out as awful and confusing as it did. Movie directors Take Heed, don't make a movie if you're ashamed of the source material.

Something to remember the next time some edgelord tries to say the people making the movie and diverting completely from what the game was are some kind of misunderstood artistic geniuses that are masters of their craft, bold and daring for "subverting expectations".
Like, god damn do I hate that kind of argument in general, but the above shows they didn't even have basic competence at their fucking jobs, artistic decisions aside.
And yes, I've seen that argument made multiple times.
It amazes me that he didn't even know that it was based off a video game. It's almost as amazing as Danny DeVito saying he didn't know what Pokemon was just a few years ago.
Without truth, there is nothing.
The directors created Max Headroom and also directed the Genius of Love music video. Seems it was assumed that since they're terrific at music videos, they'd be good at movies too. I guess this situation is like how some writers can do a terrific short story but they're TERRIBLE at novels, or vice versa.

No it didn't Sonic just continued the trend of crappy movies. They fixed the character design but the film was garbage.

I watched it often when I was a little kid. Even though it was nothing like the games, I loved it, and I loved it even more when I found out this lady is supposed to be the giant red fish... lmao. But yeah, I can still watch it and enjoy it, but I also see why people think it's one of the worst movies.

It's nice to know that Mario played King Lear. The next time I see an adaptation, I'm gonna think to myself, "This is Mario."

It's an odd quote, but I think he meant they were trying too hard to make a movie about a video game rather than adapt a story from the elements of the video game.

I cannot defend the movie against anything. But to this day if it's on and I notice, I sit down and enjoy it. Loved it then, still love it now.

The movie is terrible but I'll watch it and get enjoyment out of it

but objectively it's a trainwreck. It even sets itself up for a cliffhanger that never gets followed up on, the gusto of it

i saw the morton jankel cut a couple years ago and i had a good time watching it. yeah after reading the stories of how bad the production was, it kinda all makes sense, but really not that horrible of a movie compared to some others.

If you're talking about the Angelina Jolie one, the one and only thing I remember about it was that it had a pre-fame Daniel Craig nude scene (conveniently censored of course).

For my tastes, no, completely forgettable, apart from the aforementioned PG-13 nude scene that I only remembered years later when I somehow remembered the movie and thought "holy shit, that was Daniel Craig, wasn't it?" And I saw the movie when I was a horny teen who would've been hot for both Lara Croft and Angelina Jolie.

The first one is decent, nothing special. I never saw the sequel or remake. There may have been a short period of time in which it was the "best" movie based upon a video game.
My favorite part of the movie is when they're at the Koopa police station.
