Another funny anecdote was when Dennis Hopper's then-8-year-old son asked him why he did the SMB movie. "To buy you shoes," Hopper replied. "I didn't need shoes that badly," the kid fired back. The LA Times interviewed the cast during the production. The interviewer said they couldn't get a word from the directors, and Hopper said "The directors won't give interviews? That's the smartest thing I've heard from them! That's the only intelligent thing I've heard from them that they've actually done."
they still kinda fucking nailed the casting with those twoTruth.
"I didn't even know it was a game"

The directors created Max Headroom and also directed the Genius of Love music video. Seems it was assumed that since they're terrific at music videos, they'd be good at movies too. I guess this situation is like how some writers can do a terrific short story but they're TERRIBLE at novels, or vice versa.Annabel Jankel had a career resurgence, but it took over 10 years, and it was from directing commercials and documentaries.

He's not wrongNo it didn't Sonic just continued the trend of crappy movies. They fixed the character design but the film was garbage.
That movie was god awful and the poster child for bad video game adaptions up until Sonic the Hedgehog made everyone realize video game movies can actually be great
He's not wrong
Molten take: that Mario Bros. movie was enjoyable and Hoskins has nothing to be ashamed of.
Ironically Miyamoto suggested it was trying too hard to be like the games: https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2007/11/miyamoto-remebers-the-trouble-mario-bros-movie/
Any idea what he meant by that?
I watched it often when I was a little kid. Even though it was nothing like the games, I loved it, and I loved it even more when I found out this lady is supposed to be the giant red fish... lmao.
Mortal Kombat and Street fighter movie were better than Super Mario Bros
its insane that until sonic, the only really good video game movie was Mortal Kombat
street fighter was not as good but has had its reputation revived thanks to the net and Raul Julia
He's not wrongWhile the very first Mortal Kombat movie technically wasn't great, it was pretty damn fun. >_>

How was the Tomb Raider film out of curiosity?
If you're talking about the Angelina Jolie one, the one and only thing I remember about it was that it had a pre-fame Daniel Craig nude scene (conveniently censored of course).Oh, so not all that memorable then?
