Tried to watch multiple times and got like an hour in and turned it off every time. Felt like nothing was happening. Got to the sandworm part and I was just bored AF.

Just you.
He who strikes with meaning is killed by meaning.
I had a discussion at the bar about this. We all came up with sand worms and spice. I thought I was alone too, but none of us could explain the plot.
I'm surrounded
That was actually the end of the movie
Common sense says it may not taste good, but it'll make a turd.
I felt like I was the only geek in the world that found it boring.
If you say I am wrong, then prove that you are right.
Dune was a very trippy book, and its not great as a story IMO, though it has top notch world building and philosophy in it.

As for getting it, this is basically all there is to it. Frank Herbert saw the way people practically worshipped JFK. He didnt trust charismatic leaders and felt that following them could only lead to disaster. So thats basically what Dune as a story is about, but that mostly comes in after the first book.

I didn't have a problem understanding it, but I also read the book years ago... that helps out a lot, probably.

it very good. At least for me, movies like this take multiple screenings to really understand.
Getting high and playing video games is the best! I swear to ducking God!
Well you aren't gonna get it if you keep turning it off after only and hour.
I dont understand how it apparently has mainstream appeal. Feels like Part 2 is being hyped like a Star Wars entry, with the marketing budget to show for it.

Thats marketing at work. Though Star Wars is basically just a mishmash of Dune and Akira Kurosawa films.

Never seen any of it, not even the slightest bit of interest in it.

Been saying this for years. Dune was released just a handful of years before Lucas "came up with" SW. The influence is everywhere

There are worms and people use spice. Not too different from the real world.

The tech in it is really fuckin cool

The book was boring, the movie and the first part of its remake were boring. Didn't see the miniseries but that sega Genesis game was alright.

Tbf if youre going in fresh to this movie it can be very unclear whats going on. Because Dune has been in the zeitgeist forever Villeneuve is expecting the audience to fill in the gaps.

Imagine what he would have thought about the rise of the cult of Donnie. lol

But yeah, really this is just what happens when you give a property to someone to treats it with respect. Just like with Nolan and the Batman movies, you end up with extremely high quality movies that touch your nerd bone.

Rage is a hell of an anesthetic.
Heres what I took from it:

The main characters mom taught him some sort of telepathic powers. The bad guys are strip mining places for spice (which helps them travel) and they treat the planets and their people like dirt. The main character (Paul?) has to master his powers to stand up to the bad guys (who I forgot their name).

I still havent seen the second one or the original movie and I havent read the book(s) yet. On a side note, why does everyone seem to dislike the actor who plays the main character?
I wonder if the book or movies address if spice can be synthesized or if they even attempt to synthesize it

I definitely intend to rewatch 1 before I watch 2. I remember very little of the detail in 1

It never called to me, really. I know that it has giant penis-worms and a heavyset pedophile villain whom even the original author admitted was comedically evil. Oh, and there's something about acquiring/controlling spice.

I have little doubt that the series was influential on some of the works that I enjoy though. Dune's sandworms might have been a direct inspiration on Beetlejuice's sandworms. And I'm pretty sure that there have been levels of video games I've played that have borrowed from Dune's imagery.

So! You want to hear a story, eh?
Seen the first entry twice and while I like the setting I found it boring, didnt do much for me.
Something along the lines of seizing power by letting another clan run the spice trade, and purposely letting them fail at it so the government has an excuse to get rid of said clan.
Meanwhile, the Taliban is trying to enjoy their desert so they just ride sand worms and shoot at anyone trying to take their opium.

I like it. I understood it the first time I saw it. The original movie is pretty good too. Haven't read the books.

Fun fact:
The first Dune adaptation back in the 80s came with a spoiler-free pamphlet handed to you upon purchasing a ticket. It explained parts of the movie that the director never got to but were considered important for understanding the plot. That's the sign of a bad adaptation and makes you appreciate the LOTR trilogy for what it accomplished considering LOTR was also once deemed unfilmable.

I was disinterested in the first one for like the first 30 minutes

but then it got good. Ill need to watch it again before seeing the next one though

Why not just finish it? You've supposedly spent more time trying to watch it than actually just watching it through. It's 2.5 hours.

As for the movie itself, it's absolutely beautiful visually, as are all Denis films. He's probably the best director out there right now. You can see the time and effort he puts into his films and as a film lover, I absolutely appreciate that. If his next movie was about Russell crow taking a shit, I'd still see it day one.

Part 1 was my first exposure to it aside from knowing the name and yes, I found it boring as well. I don't even care to watch part 2 honestly.
How quaint.

I prefer the lynch version. It's was very hard to fit all that in a 2 hour movie but it does it. It has the navigators etc. Which was the whole purpose for the spice( expanding the empire). Taking that out you are left with why are they fighting over all this?

not just you. Instead of telling the story there was just lots of pretentious filmmaking in the process with a director that just became a little too full of himself.

oohh look at how beautiful we made this and look at how deep and meaningful we made that.

cut out all the slow shots and the lead actors obnoxious close ups of his face during his visions and it would probably be a much better paced 2 hour movie.
