When you're watching a stream on YouTube or Twitch, do you participate in chat?

I've been watching a lot of streams lately and noticing that a lot of people don't participate in chat. You have a a stream of like a 1 or 2 thousand and 20 or 30 people constantly chatting. Maybe 50 max. Even weirder to me is that it seems like there are a decent bit less who actually try to communicate directly towards the creator unless they're part of the "in" group. Besides situations where the streamer will ask chat questions or have a conversation with chat atleast, but there still aren't that many relative to how many people are actually there even in those cases.

Is it normal to just watch a live stream and just lurk in the chat or something? To just completely ignore it even? That just seems to go against the point of it to me.

Sometimes to laugh at what just happened. You're not supposed to chat to talk to the streamer although it does feel nice to have your message read out loud. Sometimes I chat so my name can be seen in clips.

I think the only chat I ever participated in was the original Twitch Plays Pokmon. Otherwise most stream chats move so fast I dont see a point in bothering.
Depends on the stream. If I'm an active part of their community I tend to chat more. Especially if they're playing a game I like. Otherwise I lurk and chat occasionally.

Nope, and in fact, I turn the chat off.

The only live streams I watch are things like Nintendo Directs anyway.

If I have stream playing, it typically means I'm doing something else like playing a videogame. I started doing this after I got tinnitus years ago. Playing music was okay, but listening to a conversation was or something else was more stimulating.
Your words are as empty as your soul
Rarely because nobody's going to see it most of the time. It depends how fast the chat is going. I like to watch LobosJr and his chats usually don't go too fast, so I've actually had a few back and forths with him in the chat. Sometimes I'll ask a question about a game I've decided to check out on Twitch and the chat itself will answer me.

It's not all that bad, but what truly is cringe are all the simps in the tit streamer chats. And those streamers themselves.

Watching a stream is cringe. To participate in the chat on top of that is basically announcing how cringe you are.

very rarely, unless it's a stream with a tiny audience

very rarely unless the streamer is someone I know from elsewhere and regularly talk to and it's more like some friend group hangout activity rather than a real "streamer" broadcasting to a bunch of misc fans
THIS IS WHAT I HATE A BOUT EVREY WEBSITE!! THERES SO MUCH PEOPLE READING AND POSTING STUIPED STUFF
nah streams are always a passive activity for me. i listen to them while doing other things.

Always. I always watch live ones because any time the streamer says something I'm familiar with or want to comment on, I do.
...I think I'm done here...
I very rarely watch streams, and the few I do watch are usually locked to sub-only chat. So no, I don't participate.
There are four lights.
This is actually pretty surprising.

I thought one of the biggest draws of a stream was being able to participate and talk with creators.

I have no issue saying stuff in a chat. Pretty much just a faster CE. Problem is I rarely am logged in and am too lazy to do so.
Currently Playing: FFXIV, TES games, Baldur's Gate 3, Cyberpunk 2077, Overwatch, Forza Horizon 5, Pokemon, and various random Gamepass games.

No, the only streams I really watch are gaming announcements like State of Play and Nintendo Direct. The companies aren't really responding to the chats and there's so many people watching that the chat's moving at lightning speed anyway

Sometimes.
My crowning stream chat moment was making Dr. Disrespect laugh. I can't even remember what I said, probably something stupid.

I feel like youre asking CE, an older demographic.

Younger folks are the ones chatting.

For me, I dont watch streams live. I only watch retroactively.

But I dont see the appeal of commenting something just for the streamer to ignore you because they have an incentive to focus on superchats instead. Some streamers dont even read those.

You have to find the good streamers There are plenty who still get and read all super chats. But will still read others when they see them
