Guys like Mokujin, Combot, Roger, and Alex? Nowadays, they seem to just use Kuma and Panda.

As the development cost per character increases, and the number of returning characters people expect in the base game increases, there's just less and less justification for a goofy joke character. Imagine if Roger got a roster spot but not Steve or Law.

I guess it's also worth pointing out that it does feel like the main roster has gotten sillier over time anyway. I mean, you have a flying, chainsaw wielding girlbot that throws her head at you over in the list of "serious" characters.

Yeah I mean this is my first Tekken game and theres a fair amount of silly things in the roster.

Alisa, King (he speaks in growls and everyone understands him lol), Azucena (her entire personality is coffee), the dynamic between Asuka and Lili and of course the bears

Man I remember when Tekken 2 came out and nobody cared that the models only had 10 polygons because there were like 50 characters
