I think that's canonically why he goes by Eggman. (well maybe not in the movie universe though)

My Sonic lore is pretty low but does Sonic have any main enemies besides Robotnik? The second one was so bad Im surprised they went ahead with a 3rd one. Knuckles was dumbed down too much and the plot/acting was more obnoxious than the first one. I thought the first movie was pretty solid.My kids prefer the 2nd one, I really haven't fully watched either.

To be fair people over focused on his retirement. He actually said he was retiring on the exception if there's a script he really likes he would consider doing it. Given how much he loved the sonic movies and the eggman character I actually assumed he'd be back for at least the third.
i loved the dynamic between Carrey's Robotnik and Elba's Knuckles in Sonic 2.
