Just before this, I'd put up 365 very easily so I thought I had this. To make matters worse, the plates wouldn't slide off so I had to give that up and sit-up with it. No biggie though.

holy shit that's crazy. I roll it off too, but I'm only 225.

How long does it to get gains at your level?

Impressive that you can put that much weight up at all, but please be safe.
Ignoring the ad hominem attack, I never bench so heavy that I can't control the eccentric (lowering phase). So it's really not a big deal to gently let it come back down and either slide the weights off or do a sit-up. It's when you can't control the bar and it drops that it becomes dangerous.

It took me about 5 years to bench 315, then another 6 or 7 to bench 350, and probably another 5 to hit 370.

I'm a very slow gainer and sometimes focus on martial arts or boxing over powerlifting, so my progress is probably not typical. At least I have consistency.

I wish I could do that. Those 1rm calculators put me at 280 but I haven't attemped a one rep max in years.
It's definitely something you want to work-up to. 1RM calculators are good indicators but they can be pretty far off. 385 is something I've been working toward for months.

He clearly knows how to handle failing a lift and was even smart enough to know to not put clips on the sides (although so many plates that it didn't matter lol). I don't think he NEEDS a spotter.

That was impressive af even though it was a fail. You were so extremely close to succeeding.
This. I know how to safely get out of a bench press fail and never go so heavy that the bar is liable to drop on me, which is what kills people.

Also, thanks for the props everyone.

Less so. I'm a fair bit more health-conscious as I reach my mid-30s.

I think a diet's basis should be wholesome meals as much as possible, but if you're trying to gain weight, you can add in high-calorie food like pizza or whatever to supplement that. I won't seek out junk food to gain weight, but I'll also take advantage of the calories if I'm out with friends and we want to eat out.

Good try, man. How much are you weighing now? Do you plan to bulk up or anything to try and hit it?

Serious question, why don't you take low dose steroids?

I have my own reasons why I won't take them but I've thought about them in the past.

Thanks, I weigh about 225. I've already been bulking up to now and unfortunately will start dropping down in weight because I just signed-up for a new boxing gym as of this week. I'll still lift but am realistic about progressing on a calorie deficit.

Good question! I compete in amateur powerlifting and strongman. They have drug testing on the powerlifting side, but even if they didn't, I wouldn't let myself compete when I'm on gear if I'm going up against people who aren't. I also want to have some boxing and Muay Thai matches soon, which would be even more unethical.

Also, I've always been very skinny and it used to mess with my head wondering if someone I was following had chemical assistance. I don't have anything against steroids if you're not competing against natural athletes, but I like being able to tell younger guys I've never done them so they know what's possible for themselves.

What are your reasons?

I had that exact same thing happen to me years ago at 325lbs. I just had to roll it down and wiggle out, because I couldn't get it back up to rest it. I never went heavier than that. Not sure if I even could anymore. Maybe, if I worked back up to it.

325 is no light amount to get pinned under, glad you made it out OK.

Thanks, hope you heal up soon. Pinching the shoulder blades back and holding the bar fairly narrow (pinkies in the rings) helps a lot in relieving pressure off the front deltoids. I credit that to being comfortable with the bar coming back down and getting stuck on my chest, otherwise my shoulders would be screaming.

Been lifting without a spotter for 22 years and it's worked out fine. I never lift something I can't safely lower back down.

Oh snap it's PPP!!! I still make the joke that you solo the board every year or so. Looks like you still can tbh <_<

That video still made me nervous even though you would obviously be okay since this topic/OP is a spoiler and all.
https://abload.de/img/aonp7v.gif
I'm less worried about your safety than I am about how embarrassing that entire thing would have felt. Like there really is no graceful way to fail a bench solo, once it's sufficiently heavy enough. You couldn't even manage a roll of shame here.

Grats man. You weren't all that far away from completing it. I'm throwing around a lot less weight and my failed lifts look dramatically less graceful.

Honestly, I would've been more worried if I saw clips on the barbell than I am by a lack of a spotter.

For someone who knows how to fail properly, a spotter just makes things easier, but it's not necessary. If for whatever reason, you decide to lift significantly too much and it comes down too fast, idk if a spotter could even help in that scenario.
I actually only started going without clips this year because I figured I prefer being able to carefully wrangle that amount of weight off me versus having it whip to either side. I happened to try failing without the clips so the plates slid off and it worked fine so I'm going without clips, but as you can see in the video, I do just fine with the sit-up way. Having big quadriceps helps because they act like padding and keep the bar away from my junk.

I never lift an amount that would make the bar liable to drop on me. As a powerlifter, I aim to not miss reps because it's neurologically bad to ingrain failing as part of your motor patterns, so when it does happen it's usually pretty close and I'm more than capable of at least lowering it safely. Risking the bar dropping is unacceptable to me.

I'll also add that I'd never recommend a beginner max out without a spotter or safety bars. You need to have some meat on you and lots of experience to wrestle and grind safely against the bar.

beast tho. He been stuck at 275. My buddy and his brother warm up with 315, its unfair

I once got stuck under the bar plus like twenty pounds per side because I tried to do presses while my triceps were completely dead.

I'd have been squeezed like a tube of toothpaste here.
