What is Shoegaze?

I've seen the music genre Shoe Gaze or ShoeGaze or something pop up on Reddit recently as a suggested sub. I had never heard of that genre before. It kept popping up like every day and I kept asking myself that question but never looked up the answer.

Today I was reading an article on the 100 Greatest Indie Rock Albums and they listed Turn On The Bright Lights which I loved. They mentioned it had shoegaze qualities. So with that said, WTF is Shoegaze?

I'd be down with any kind of rock revival. The current hard rock on the radio is just garbage.

Shoe Gaze came along in the 90s in the UK, but i dont know how well it ever caught on in the USA. Its rather tranquil and low energy sounding. Its best to give you song examples to explain the genre

The Lightening Seeds - You Showed Me
Curve - Horror Head
Radiohead - How To Disappear

And pretty much any song by Primal Scream

Rock music is thriving rn

in particular there is a lot of 90s revivalism going on

Thanks for the responses so far.

I'm a big indie rock/alternative guy. I'm not into all the different sub genres. Like I couldn't tell you the difference between Crust Punk and Crunkcore. All the sub genres get into intricacies I don't understand or have the ability to point out.

Like this one... this sounds a bit like the band Stars, which I like, with a little less instruments. It doesn't sound much like the My Bloody Valentine songs that were linked which is band I have heard of but haven't attempted to listen to really.

Honestly the genres are so often paired I don't even bother differentiating them. They give me the same vibes and feelings

I like that song and band.
I prefer Anathema, who are similar. Best song ive heard by Radiohead so far is Blow Out, i love the instrumental ending, it sounds all moody and mysterious

shoegaze is probably my favorite genre of music tbh. just always usually chill but has some loud moments.

one of my favorite shoegaze tracks. this band also just got back together last year and released a new album, which was a banger.

i can pull some more shoegaze tracks if you want.

I love shoegaze/blackgaze. 2022 is when I started to really binge blackgaze, though.
I like Lush, and I've been told their earlier works count as shoegaze.

I guess this can now be a "link your best shoegaze songs" thread since some people seem to be discovering some stuff.

Kind of. More of a huge influence, along with JaMC. Put those two bands together and Shoegaze is what you get.

Agreed!

Also, I think I only like two "glitch" songs, and the DJ BC Remix of Love's Easy Tears is one of them:

Oh, I was expecting this to be about one of the new FLCL series that's sitting on my DVR.
Irregardless, for all intensive purposes, I could care less.
Shoegaze is about the only modern music movement that hooks me.

For a long time i did think that thats why the genre was called "Shoegaze", because the music puts you in such a dreary semi sedated mental state, that you just stand there with your head hanging down gazing at your feet. But apparently its because the musicians have to interact with foot pedals so much that their spending their time playing while looking at their feet instead of at the audiance.

And yeah I'll be checking everything in this topic. Nothing hits quite like shoegaze when you're really in the mood for it. Gotta have some good headphones to catch everything though

Although Shoegaze is credited for being a genre that was established in the 90s, i do actually think some songs from the 60s and 70s show the same traits that Shoegaze does and could possibly be considered proto shoegaze. Ive got 2 nominations

Blue Oyster Cult - I love the Night
Mathews Southern Comfort - Woodstock

If you listen to the soundtrack of the first ever Crow movie (the one that starred Brandon Lee), you will hear Shoegaze songs on that.
Silversun Pickups has kept on going strong with the shoegaze style for almost 2 decades now
