Note that I am only about 8 hours in so open to the idea that it completely changes. So far it has been more cutscenes than gameplay, and the gameplay is mostly straight corroders with no choices and even almost no character customization at all. What makes this even an RPG? Experience and stats you have zero control over? It is barely even an adventure game.

I yelled at someone here a couple days ago for calling it an interactive movie, because people say that all time for like every game made by Sony. But this really is, and I apologize for whoever I yelled at.

I really hope I start enjoying this more. I was so excited but I feel all there is to look forward to is the story. The combat is fun but I need more.

I know there was one. Not sure if they left it up post launch.

It seemed everyone loved the demo. I am just waiting for the game to actually let me do anything besides fight pre-ordained battles.

In the last few years, I adored FF7 Remake and mostly liked FF15

I might still end up really liking this one too, but I expected it to be somewhere between 13 and 15 in terms of openness. It's not.

The game does branch out a bit in the latter half with more open environments, as well as with combat as you acquire more abilities, unlocking more options in battle. It's still a linear game through and through, but thankfully it doesn't feel like corridors and hallways the entire time. Later in the game, without spoiling anything, you're also going to be treated to some truly spectacular fights.

It's definitely not perfect, but I'm having a lot of fun with it, overall.
Good to know. To me it is really odd that they wouldn't throw some open environments in after finishing the prologue.

Great prologue btw. Gut wrenching.

Damn 8 hours? In Persona 5 (infamous for its slow start) you can start the first dungeon properly (not the tutorial part of it) quicker than that.

That's just it. I am well past the intro. It just remains ridiculously linear with no choices and very little customization.

You'll likely grow to appreciate the story and cast of characters quite a bit as events unfold. It might feel like a bit of a slow burn in that regard, but it's well worth seeing how things play out. Honestly best cast of FF characters since X, if not even better.

It's definitely not perfect, but I'm having a lot of fun with it, overall.

but realistically thats saying better than 3 FFs that all had pretty disliked characters.

it is a step in the right direction though which is something at least

Damn man. I would get too annoyed by that. I already thought hi fi rush had too many cinematics throughout its levels which annoyed me throughout the game.

Does ffxvi play like dmc 5 btw? looks like it but idk if it feels like it with the button presses and stuff like that. Its combat is the only thing that interests me but I dont want to go through like most of a game to experience all its options

I'm glad all you grown men are enjoying all these games.

For me, as I get older, less games impress me. Only the best of the best can get me engaged long enough to finish them.

Probably it's because I don't have much free time. But I'll sacrifice sleep for a good story.

Never mind its a ps5 game? So I wouldn't find a demo for it on my ps4 pro huh, I'd have to get the ps5?

When did "no customization" and "linear" start meaning "interactive movie"?

People complain about every open-world game that isn't Elden Ring, but don't want linear games either.

i just call any game that relies heavily on dialogue and cutscenes for its storytelling to be an interactive movie. I much prefer game's stories to be told through things you find in the environment like pc terminals (may include text/audio/or video log files), notes , and carefully placed objects that allow players to infer what happened. Many low-budget adventures (most of them are very linear games) do this type of storytelling well.

I've never had the patience to sit through cinematics in games tbh altho I have no problems with watching a movie. Idk why

so there is jump canceling in this game but it limited to 2 (that is what the first result on google say) wtf! i like staying in the air and mashing that my fave part of dmc 3-5 tb. it just like a stress ball to me. I wonder why there is a limit in ffxvi. Was it to add more depth?

It really is. I just unlocked the 4th set of abilities, and it was almost 40 minutes of cutscenes. Sure, there was a dungeon just before and a boss fight, but even those were littered with cutscenes. It feels like it's got a 5-10 minute cutscene for every 2-3 minutes of gameplay.

Sorta but not really.

The basics feel inspired by it. You've got a move that's kinda like the stinger for example. But for the most part the combos are simple and it's more about managing your abilities cooldowns and for tougher enemies it's more about breaking their guard and dishing out as much damage as possible when they're vulnerable.

How did Final Fantasy turn into Asura's Wrath overnight anyway?

I'm watching a fight that's closer to a turret section than an RPG fight.
The music's generic orchestra.
There are times where the game looks like Dissidia but then it goes right back to the same few cinematic attack animations.

The absurdity is making me want to know more.

Square-Enix sometimes has really funny ideas on what it means to expand the audience of their games lol

Doubt it'll work out in the way they hope but at the least it's overall still a solid ass video game.

I love the idea that someone seems to have gone " Look, FF games are great but the next one should really be a lot less like FF and a lot more like Forspoken or our 2018 magnum opus THE QUIET MAN ." and that this person was apparently very convincing.

What ever square enix does, they just know they are padded by the 'final fantasy' name.

If they called forspoken final fantasy, the game would get an 8/10 and the 'game will be great' all of a sudden. And tons of fans will defend it.

The prologue is cutscene heavy for sure, but I feel like 10 hours in you should have been given more gameplay segments and side quests.

I'm 20 hours in and I'm liking the cutscene to gameplay to side quest ratio.

Yeah, the RPG aspects are very light. Shops having nothing worth buying and equipment so far seems to just be crafting stuff with the biggest numbers. Levels and abilities are pretty linear too

I remember saying this a few days ago and everyone went into defend are corporate overlords honor mode. On the bright side, at least the plot is in the game this time instead of a movie that didn't even have the games main character in it or the plot happened off screen.

Yeah, I never played 12

I played 1, 4, 6, 7 and 8 (and Tactics) back when I was a kid, high school and college. Didn't play again for like 2 decades. In the last few years I played 10 (and quit), 15, and 7 Remake.

Ended up playing about 3.5 hours now (oops, dangers of working from home), but I am definitely feeling better about it. It opened up some after the Benedikta / Garuda fight . Still linear but at least there is some exploration and side quests and I can play for 20 minutes without long cutscenes.
