I had a Lyft driver who was also a private detective.

said he did stuff like check people out who filed for disability/were injured on the job to see if things looked honest, or something like that.

these people are pricks and when it's actually legitimate try to catch them in acts that look like they're fine.

So then you'll be useless the next 99..
Detectives are just like one rank above normal patrol cop. I'm not sure how their duties differ. I'd imagine they spend less time in the field.

sorry, I misread your post.

I haven't met him personally, but a police detective left a card where I could contact him on my door after a couple of suspicious people were seen walking around the neighborhood.

yea, I assume it's better for them, as far as money goes, to "catch the person in the act"
I was interviewed by a detective once.

I bet money that the job paints the "suspects" as basically all Frank Gallagher from Shameless.

Every time I see private detectives in movies, I do wonder if there's people wasting their life doing this as "job".

Recently like Daniel Craig character in Knives Out.
Mobage: Fire Emblem Heroes [F2P BTW]
Console: Tear Ring Saga
When I was a kid our house got robbed.

They sent a detective and he dusted for prints and everything.

If anything, a lot of Detectives just get iced in movies because of the shadowy nature of the job.

Or like Gyllenhaal in Prisoners, they get too attached into it's dark nature. It's a really intriguing line of work but it almost feels like you have to sacrifice your soul due to the shit you'll see.

I never understand why someone would want to be a private detective. Can't imagine people are going to pay money for a dude who doesn't even have the same powers as a police to do the job that the real police will be doing anyways.

Unless you commit or are a victim of a crime worth investigation (Kidnapping, Homicide, Armed Robbery, etc.) you'll never see them.
yes, one pulled me out of class to discuss a stolen car.

In high school a couple of buddies and I were smoking in an alley between two rows of houses.

I'm just about to start enjoying my Cheesy Double Beef Burrito when three cop cars come SCREAMING up on us.

We'd been in this spot a few times over a week or so.

Turns out we were parked behind the house of a detective for the county PD.

Some words were had, the cops chilled pretty quick when they realized we were just idiots, not casing the guy's house for a vengeance murder or something, told us to get the fuck out of there.

Detectives do the followup. You see the patrol cops because they're out and about.. patrolling. If a patrol cop's case needs followup the detective handles it. They're usually calling people and setting up interviews with witnesses and stuff. Not as much field work.

i mean, in all fairness it was my car. nothing could really be done about it. i just didnt have my full license and took it. some ballyhoo took place, and a nice detective came to "rap" with me one-on-one about it. i denied it, and i was eventually charged with...nothing.

Oh I guess I misread that. So you reported your car as stolen but you just didn't have your license on you at the time so the detective thought you were trying to pull something?
