the only time I didn't was when a friend gave me his copy of sapphire slightly past the second gym, with torchic already picked as starter. combusken looked dumb and I really wanted a swampert so I sorta boxed it out of spite

Gen 1 and 2 I kept them.

Gen 3 is when I boxed mine during my 1st playthrough. I went with Treecko but swapped him out for a different one not long after getting his final evolution since I didn't like Sceptile. Subsequent playthrough I kept Blaziken and Swampert though.

Never played the later gen games.

Diamond/Pearl, I don't know which gen that is. The only other fire type in the game was Ponyta/Rapidash. And then they were dumb enough to make one of the Elite 4 a fire type, so he had Rapidash and Infernape as his only two fire Pokemon and then he had Steelix, Drifblim, and fuckin' Lopunny who each had one fire move and then Sunny Day.

Gen 5 starters so trash. They're solid in every other game besides (arguably) gen 7 but I've only played through those once each

I always use one the first run of a region, but of late I don't really have any problem either way with boxing them because I've used all of them before either during the adventure or in Facilities/PvP except Litten which I was putting off until Intimidate came out

Nuzlockes are the exception I use for not keeping my starter through the story and I still keep them in the party till they die.
