Hmmmm
Well its definitely one of the most iconic tunes in Sonic games.

My favorite's the Underground Zone theme. One of the stranger choices, probably, but I love it.

Did you get some bootleg copy with some wack music on it?
I just don't like the style, and I don't tend to like shrill high pitch grating music. another game that's like that where the music is probably well written and enjoyable musically, but it's so shrill I can't enjoy it comfortably, is Cave Story.

I guess an exception to that though is NES Mega Man music, which can be pretty shrill but I still tend to enjoy it. I know I like electronic music, so maybe that is why.
Ice Cap Zone was always a good one and would definitely be in my top 3 sonic OST pieces at least. I would want a new Ice Cap Zone in any potential Sonic Mania 2, purely for the sake of the inevitable remake of this theme.

Metropolis is also a very fun theme.

Sky Sanctuary was pretty good too.

For some reason I kinda liked Mystic Cave's music too.

Lava Reef (both parts 1 and 2) were not bad.

Good tune, but it's s not even the best music in the Genesis games.

Lava Reef Act 1, yo.

Sonic Mania had some cool revamps in second stages as well.

And of course.

But lets be honest. Even the stage most of us hate the guts of isn't too bad music-wise.

Eh, Streets of Rage was my jam.
Chemical Plant Zone OST is kinda like Final Fantasy VII to me:

-Is it the most well known if its brethren? Yes (probably)
-Is it really good? Yes
-Is it the best? Nooooooooooo way

Picking the best would be hard though.
Currently: Playing Ys VIII
Thinking about my playthrough of Xenoblade Chronicles 2
'Nope'

It could be considered one of the top five. Casino Night Zone (2 player) has my personal pick as 'best' though.

I would literally stay in the menu for long periods of time because of this.

No, not even remotely close, there's tons of fantastic music in this franchise, Sonic 2 doesn't even have any of the better ones, the music's good in Sonic 2, definitely one of the better aspects of the game, but compared the rest of the franchise when we're talking about this particular franchise? Haha, oh wow, no, not at all.
Kill the legs first, that's an ironclad battle tactic!

It's not even the best theme in Sonic 2.

Death Egg Zone is my favorite.

Chemical Plant is a really good song, and the act 2 remix in Mania is even better. It's one of my favorite classic Sonic themes along with Hydrocity Act 2 and Lava Reef Act 2.

The Adventure games, '06, and Unleashed are probably my favorites in terms of Sonic soundtracks, though.
Delicious and vicious, while maliciously nutritious.

I cant really tell what bottom right is adding to the music except for the occasional tambourine(?) and I have nooo idea why top right tossed a cat and if that added anything to the music...?

Nah, metropolis zone.

Chemical Plant is definitely memorable, yes, and many would call it iconic. This is an entirely subjective debate, however, and although that is a great song (and fits the Zone it appears in), here are just a few which I consider to be better off the top of my head:

"Ice Cap Zone Act 1/Act 2" from Sonic 3 which have already been mentioned are both absolutely fantastic:

"Mystic Cave Zone - 2P VS version", from Sonic 2:

"Panic Puppet Zone - Act 1" from Sonic 3D Blast - people who have never played this game but have played Sonic Adventure on Dreamcast/GCN will be very surprised when they hear it:

"Hyper-Hyper" - from the Sonic Crackers 1994 Prototype (a later version of which appears in the released Sega 32x game Knuckles Chaotix):

"Electoria" - also from Sonic Crackers:

And my personal favorite overall: "Gene Gadget Zone - Act 2" from the Genesis/Mega Drive version of Sonic 3D Blast. Really shows off what the YM2612 sound chip can do:

"Who Here Hates Those Damn Eagles?" 5/13/01 - 1/8/05. Ninja Gaiden (NES). By Mikage. The greatest topic ever on GameFAQs.

Why do people on the internet always call music "songs" when there are no lyrics involved?

is there a singular word for non-lyrical music that I'm forgetting? not quite right to call it "a music". how would you word the sentence "how many sonic _____ are there?" or "there are five sonic _____".
^Well there's "track" or "theme." But I don't have a preference either way.

hmmm...

"track" seems to imply *this specific representation of the music*, and not, say, a remix or something.

"theme" seems to imply just the melody, or main notes.

"song" seems to me to capture the whole piece of music, without necessarily restricting it to just this version.

but w/e
^I guess "tune" can be considered another alternative. I personally just say "track" usually while conveniently almost never discussing remixes.

Not my fav, but the hidden palace zone music has always made me think of a haunted house :/

yeah but "track" implies a recording, even maybe specifically a record, but at least a "chunk" of some kind of playback media like a cassette tape. doesn't that have the same issue as "song" (technically inaccurate but everyone basically knows what you mean)?

"tune" still seems to refer to the melody in particular

I want a word that says "this whole piece of music, abstracted from any particular version". a guess is that due to the absence of such a word, everyone ends up unconsciously selecting one to use for that purpose; in my case I use "song".
No. It's good, but it's not even the best track in its own game (see also: Mystic Cave Zone, Casino Night Zone).

Off the top of my head, Ice Cap Zone (Sonic 3), Sky Sanctuary Zone (Sonic & Knuckles), Doomsday Zone (Sonic & Knuckles), and half the Sonic Adventure and Sonic Generations soundtracks are all better options.
Kill 1 man: You are a murderer. Kill 10 men: You are a monster.
Kill 100 men: You are a hero. Kill 10,000 men, you are a conqueror!
