Do you think it should be legal to refuse someone a job because of their sexual orientation?

21 y/o Faith Grace from Alabama posted a text she got from a pregnant mother who RETRACTED her request for her services because she found out that Faith was a LESBIAN!!

The woman reached out to the mobile based photographer and asked her to take her maternity photos which she accepted but the next day she got a text from her again and asked about her sexual preferences after browsing her instagram page and found the "pride flag" in there

The woman wrote Hi Faith! This is McKenna from last night. I was reaching out to you about maternity photos! I went through your personal instagram account to get your photography business account and on your personal pad i saw that you had a pride flag. Are you gay or do you have family that's gay?" Grace replied with "Hey McKenna! Thanks for reaching out. Nobody in my fam is gay but i am. that's why i have it on my account"

McKenna did not take that too well and it became furious and she said "I see, Ok. well don't worry about the photos then. I don't want someoenw ho's gay to take my pictures. It's just not right. I'm against it and the last thing i need is to allow my 5 year old child to think that being gay is OK/right because i don't want them to be influenced by people like you. I'm sorry that you think that this lifestyle is OK and acceptable. Take care, Faith"

Faith was heartbroken by the text as the post quickly got attention as Grace's profile states she's been a photographer since she was 16 and has been taking portraits of people her whole life..

Do you think it should be legal to refuse someone a job because of their sexual orientation? let's see what people think

Even if it was illegal to refuse a job application or whatever because of sexual orientation I don't think it would be very good for that person to work for someone who probably hates them like that.

Also how the actual fuck would that bitch's kid know if their Photographer was gay? Are you required to put "My name is _____ and I'm gay" on your photos?

yes

i wouldnt want to hire someone with whose morals i disagree
I don't think so, Tim.

To those voting yes, would you be ok with being denied a job because of the color of your eyes?

That's just wrong. Totally unacceptable behaviour.

There was no need for that woman to prattle on about homosexuality and its lifestyle being unacceptable. Her personal feelings on the matter wasn't necessary. If she didn't want to work with her, just cancel the request. There was no need for such crude remarks.

not everywhere. just most big companies don't do it or at least their applications claim they don't. but where I live a company can at the very least fire you for any reason the want to. hell they could fire you because they think your eyes are too far apart. they could get in trouble for racism/sexism and shit like that but what protects them is the fact they don't have to tell you why you got fired.

hell I remember in my first job the boss never even told me I was fired, I just came in one day and noticed my name was no longer on the schedule. only reason I know why, is because I was friends with a few of the employees and they told me anytime business sucked he would get rid of who ever was the lowest man on the totem pole which happened to be me.

The title is rather misleading because it makes it sound like a business is discriminating with its hiring practices when in fact it's the opposite. Faith is running a business and the customer is rejecting her service.

The reply doesn't sound that furious, and that was rather underhanded to call her "it".

That's totally within her right as a parent to control what her child is exposed to.

on topic. i'm not sure how I feel about this. I feel its in private business's right to do as they please within the law such as turning away customers for whatever reason they want. but on the other hand I don't think people should be denied jobs because of things that have zero effect on their ability to perform the job.

That's pretty vague. Will I be going to hell if I judge others? What if they're murderers? Is there a FAQ?

I don't know if you're familiar with how entitled customers are and how liberal they are about sharing their feelings about you, your work ethic, your face, the access milliseconds they have to wait, how many peas are under their mattress, whether or not they'd like to have a son just like you...

People should be free to refuse for any reason.

The "job" in question is a customer hiring her to take photos. The same protections offered against potential employers don't exist within that scope.

When I was in high school and college, I would occasionally be refused jobs on the basis of being a male (twice I learned after the fact from a worker, another time the owner flat-out told me he only hires women). Instead of bitching about it and trying to sue the owners (which probably wouldn't work because men don't have the same protections under law as women -- specifically because those bills are written with women in mind), I just looked for work elsewhere. More importantly, the "job" here isn't even normal employment -- it's one a one-time contract gig.

This. Although technically it is a job, it's just really bad wording.

Like SKARDAVNELNATE already pointed out, the photographer is the business, the pregnant woman is the customer. Fundamentally speaking, it's no different than boycotting a business.

yeah I didn't see his post until after I posted. he must of posted while I was typing that one up.

also generally on topics like this I address the general idea of whats being talked about more so than the specific circumstance as I don't trust most news sources on the internet to give me all the facts, and the posters in the topic even less so.
