Distance is basically the only correct answer. They exist somewhere out there but there is no way to know how far intelligent life forms have progressed. They could have existed long ago and already destroyed themselves some where far away just like the same thing will happen on Earth eventually leaving no evidence that life ever existed as time goes on. The Universe is beyond a way to big of a place and all life that will ever happen here is only a tiny pocket of time that will one day vanish even if there is a much more intelligent alien race out there trying to find other life forms, they still will never find us.
