my understanding, from People Who Know What They're Talking About, is that:
1) If he didn't have basically the exact tires he had, they would've blown out and he would've spun out into who-knows-who while going 70MPH faster than them.
2) If he'd hit the access gate, that car could be going anywhere.
3) If the car in front of him at the end had been 2-3 car lengths closer, it would've ended with a nasty crash. As it was, he was pretty lucky to just bump.---
