Admittedly it might be different right now because of the huge uptick in users, but for what it's worth back when I played it the online aspect wasn't nearly as bad as I expected it to be. You didn't see other players very often so it didn't really have that weird MMO feel or anything, and the community is surprisingly friendly for an online game (maybe there's some deeper insight to be found about the kindness of people willing to give things a second chance and think for themselves, idk) so when you did meet people they were happy to leave you alone if you're not interested in the multiplayer aspect.
