He put up a so called good fight because Luffy definitely wasn't trying to kill him, just rough him up.
So many let certain fights go to their head. I remember my 14 year old sister thinking she could take my father and mother at the same time. Girl was 70 lbs soaking wet and failed to grasp just how much my father had to hold back pinning her down. My father wasn't going to clock her, and even pinning her down he didn't want to hurt her. So ofc after it taking a minute to pin her without doing serious harm, she let it go to her head she has a good shot at taking him.
