Well the first problem is that healthcare shouldn't be a matter of the free market. Though as a consequence of that, the US actually has a lot of hospital capacity compared to Canada which has been underfunded and understaffed for 40 years.

People seem averse to field hospitals for some reason which is exactly the kind of solution that's needed to deal with intermittent spikes during a pandemic. It doesn't necessarily need to be permanent infrastructure (though again in the case of Canada we need permanent infrastructure because we can't even handle seasonal flu patients).
