These days I feel like Lost's writers were really lucky and stumbled onto some good ideas and good casting, but had no idea how to finish a mystery or write compelling female characters. Their male characters weren't necessarily a LOT better written, but were more likable because their actors did phenomenal jobs. The actresses on the show never had much of a chance, because their characters sole purpose seemed to be to serve as a love interest to somebody. At least among the main characters.
I still love the show, but they missed a lot of opportunities and could've made some of the female characters just as compelling as their male characters with a bit more effort from the writers.
