IF is a million times better than 4. 4 is probably one of the worst JRPGs ever made. So far this game is pretty fun. I like Raymond more than I thought I would.
Other than the main character's name and the voice acting, I enjoyed 4's pacing and combat a lot better than IF. That said, I've finished 4, and stopped IF after like 6 hours.
Does IF improve for someone who wasn't enjoying it early?
