In that case I suppose it depends the context being as it's also a offensive term for black folk.
The two words are pronounced differently
I regularly say negro to my friends, most usually as a last-second self-censor. I haven't noticed any of my non-black friends doing the same though, so maybe you all are right about it being offensive.
