The show is more like a character driven mystery. There's the main intrigue about the antagonist, his origins, his plans. Then there's the character development as the main character meets different people and tries to come to terms with what morality is to them. The medical aspect is certainly irrelevant by the time you get past the first 5-10% of the series.
