I haven't even played Remake yet.
He isn't playable in Rebirth. Doesn't even appear till, if I remember correctly, the last quarter of the game and mostly just follows the party and makes random observations or mentions of Sephy boy. He looks pretty good though, imo.
Spoilers for the Game: He is a boss fight at the Shinra manor, but that's the extent you interact with him in a gameplay sense.
