That's really quite stupid
When red onions were named, there was no such thing as the word "purple" in the English language. It was considered red. In fact, red also included pink, orange, and some shades of brown.
If you wanted to refer to the shade of red that coincided with purple, you would have to compare it (ie "red like an onion" or "red like wine").
