Howdy all. Since the announcement is a little bit vague (as corporate announcements tend to be), I just wanted to hop in and chime in a bit more casually about why the board was closed.

The primary reason for the closure was an attempt to help align all of Fandom's newly acquired brands with the existing community guidelines that they already have for Fandom.com. Political boards on other brands like GameSpot were also shut down as well.

Generally, Fandom attempts to prevent communities being built specifically about politics. You can see an exerpt from here: https://www.fandom.com/community-creation-policy

"Wikis whose main purpose is to represent a political party, advocate for or against a political ideology, or generally opine regarding political issues;"

I originally had some hesitation about this idea when it was first brought up, but to be honest, board 261 was by far the biggest drain on our moderator resources across the whole site, and one of the boards that garnered the most complaints from users. In the end, I do agree that it makes sense not to have a board that specifically caters to one of the most notoriously spanisive conversational topics known to man. By removing the board, we are actually helping the mod team as well.

Its literally a video game message board with boards for comics, sports and pro wrestling. Discussion is supposed to be spanisive at some levels and politics unfortunately is going to be a part of lives for a long time very unfortunately. I appreciate the logic of not enough mods/time to deal with it but that sounds like a FANDOM problem. If they dont wanna deal with it close it down and devote more traffic to articles about how Fast X is redefining an era or top 10 Fortnite skins or some shit.

Politics is a fantastic platform for the growth of thought and exchange of ideas and while 261 wasnt really that anymore its just a sad sign of things to come. I still appreciate gamefaqs because it has that raw old school internet feel where you have a shot at genuinely interacting with people and finding new thoughts instead of having it funneled towards what some corporation or media arms want us to talk about.

All weve got left is limited twitter characters, YouTube comments, and Reddit which is just a contest for who can make the wittiest comment most of the time. No real people engagement. We had us a community here. Now all we got is bodies and predatory companies like fandom. Makes me sick how far we done fell.*

*Not actually that dramatic, started riffing and naturally finished with a wire quote
