Reminder that Peru had a left-wing President until he got overthrown by his vicepresident with the help of the right-wing congress and the police. Now the former left-wing President is in jail.
Peru's congress is dominated by people who think the fascist dictator Alberto Fujimori who forcibly sterilized indigenous women is a swell guy. The current President is basically their point woman, but she's understood to be a placeholder with the goal being to get Fujimori's daughter Keiko back into office someday; the current President is just keeping the seat warm for now.
Pedro Castillo (the former President who's now in jail) was just the latest of several Peruvian presidents fucked over by the obstructionist Congress in recent years.
