I don't know much about it but I always heard about the original Steam Machine, which predates the Steam Deck. Anyway now a new gen Steam Machine is coming. Its basically a Steam Deck that lacks hand held and is 6 times more powerful

I think you just plug it to your TV and it works like a traditional console.

What it does better than console is you can have DP to Monitor and HDMI to TV, and have both console and desktop modes on either, and get the best of everything.

You mean like, if youre using the DP monitor you get a full desktop experience, and if youre using the HDMI monitor/TV you get Steam Big Picture mode?

You can do console mode on your monitor or desktop mode on your TV too

I'm curious to see how many people buy this console and when the reviews come. I doubt I'll ever go to another console, outside of the next PlayStation.

I don't like early pics I sawof the Steam controller. That looks so stupidly designed, and not fun to hold in two hands. I assume the console will allow for 3rd party controllers to be used.

It runs SteamOS so you can use basically any controller imaginable. Digital Foundry did a deep dive preview and said the controller's actually really comfortable and not awkward to hold at all.

Or even 8bitdo controllers.

Linux supports basically every controller. Just not Switch 2 controllers yet

Yes. But its 6 times more powerful than the Deck. That's the trade off. No portability but more power

Any idea what the price point might be on this?

Ive been wanting to get a plug and play type rig thatll let me play a lot of the indie games that take forever to hit consoles if they ever do.

I also dont game anywhere but my designated gaming room so a being non portable sounds great to me.

Might grab this if it's reasonably priced.

Yeah Im kinda dumb about when it comes to the spec breakdowns in these so hopefully someone has a ballpark number of what it might land at.

I like playing my Steam Deck on the Tv, and I never play my Switch or Switch 2 in handheld mode. Maybe Ill sell the Steam Deck for this.

Pretty average, at least the CPU and GPU are not sharing RAM.

Wrong question to ask. a 3080 outperforms PS5.

This console will be pretty close to PS5. Less CUs than PS5, but has a slightly higher clock speed and more modern GPU. It's like 85% as fast in raw speed. CPU is about even.

One is system ram (CPU), the other is video ram (GPU). Those don't need to match

It does. My original Steam Box has Windows. Just install a second hard drive with Windows on it.

i already have a PS5, a Switch 2 and a good gaming PC so yeah, im good on that front. lol

So it's as powerful as an RTX 4060 while being the size of a gamecube. Why tf does nvidia make their GPUs giant bricks that blow out enough hot air to heat an entire room.

Because it is likely built around the variants used in gaming laptops, which have thermal issues. They get too hot, and thermal throttling reduces ingame performance so the GPU does not melt. Desktop PCs have those massive coolers so they don't melt, and are able to run at much higher settings for considerably longer periods of time because of that. The Steamcube is going to have performance issues.

Not that big, the GPU draws only 110w. Desktop video cards pull 2 sometimes 3 times that amount.
