Tropical Freeze is probably an objectively better game, but I will always prefer the original trilogy, of which DKC2 is my favorite.

DKC2

TF is good, but I just hate the art style. It has that overly bright and clean plastic aesthetic that plagues so many Nintendo games. The SNES titles had this gritty look that perfectly captured the raw look of nature and weathered environments.

Eh, in terms of unfairness I felt DKC1 had more "Fuck you" moments.

The last Kremlin in Mine Cart Carnage or the klaptrap that jumps when you jump at the very end of Loopy Lights both come to mind.

2 was overall harder, but I don't remember any outright bullshit moments.

Which bits are you thinking of? The only one that occurs to me is the Squawks section of Animal Antics (with the wind and the brambles), and even that just takes practice (a lot of practice). Other levels like Toxic Tower are tough but I wouldn't call them unfair.

OG Returns had waggle controls for rolling... game was still pretty solid but it was not great for the time trial shit to have random delay on rolls.

I was disappointed when Returns came out, and the DK Country series was my favorite growing up. Bananza was the first game to really live up to that hype for me.

I recently just replayed the classic trilogy for the first time in ~20 years and DKC2 really was not particularly bad. Toxic Tower was annoying, but that's really the only level that stands out to me as being even a bit challenging.

3 is great. It was my favorite as a kid, just because it was the easiest to blast through a full playthrough on. But even if it's the weakest of the three, upon reexamination, it's still a marvelous game.
