And due to the fact that the multiplayer mode wasn't that good, more than a few reviewers lowered their rating of the game as a result.

They were contractually obligated to do it. That's how they convinced 2K to have a free reign to go nuts with the single player.

It really should have been cut, it was a generic military shooter that didn't fit with the actual game people were interested in. But at least a compromise was found (the outsourcing) so the single players could be as awesome as possible.

At the end of the day, the review scores don't really matter because the story is rightfully the game's true legacy.

IIRC the multiplayer is usually well remembered as a highlight. Especially Beach and Heist.

Basically just deathmatch maps where you can play as the different Kongs IIRC

this one kinda sucks since the maps are so big + laggy and you move really slowly, I also played it a lot and the only way to make it at all playable is to houserule a ban on all healing item pickups or rounds will literally last an hour with no one winning

The one that's a chaotic battle with special items in the really tiny arena is way better

Tony Hawk 4. you could plug your ps2 into the internet! I did this and it was pretty awesome. this was way before this was common.

THPS3 had online too. Actually it was the first PS2 game to have online multiplayer, which by extension means it was the first Playstation game ever to have online multiplayer

I always heard great things about the multiplayer in those early Assassins Creed games. Im sad that I never got to try them ):

matchmaking took like 15 minutes but it was totally worth it to get demolished by people doing 30 million + combos

On a similar sort of line of thought - mario kart double dash had LAN netplay that supported up to 16 players all playing simultaneously. Not a proper fit for this topic since the normal multiplayer is quite well known but still a funny piece of trivia

But only if you had 8 systems and TVs and such. With two systems you could play up to 8 player, with 4 on each, but with three or more systems you could only do 2 players on each, and no splitscreen, it had to be a driver and a gunner.

Star Wars: Episode III had one of the best unexpected multiplayer battle modes!
