Yeah ironically, precisely because so much of the internet is AI-poisoned, I personally have been browsing Wikpedia more often

I've had AI summaries be wrong before, but I guess the general public doesn't care about that.

Wikipedia is probably the most important online resource available imo. This is pretty concerning.

Fortunately it's possible to download entire backups and view them 100% offline on special apps. I need to update my own backup but the full download size with pics/media ended up being 70GB. I'm sure the text-only downloads would be much smaller.

This is the goal. If a corporation AI is the one providing information then they can always exit what topics the ai can talk about or what information they will provide about certain topics.

Wikipedia itself is not really a source and Wikipedia itself sources information. If you are writing a paper that requires citations, you shouldn't be citing Wikipedia.

Thats because it isnt a source. Its a compilation of sources. And it is peer edited. And it can be tampered with.

Your teacher wanted you to source the actual sources, not just wikipedia.

Yeah, and it's a way they can get plausible deniability because they don't need to make the real information impossible to access just make the bad information easier to access.

Has Wikipedia said anything about using AI themselves? Would be kinda ironic if they eventually switch over to some kind of AI overseeing the site.

Direct sources of information will be a luxury only available to the wealthy.

The rest of us will only be afforded shadow puppets in pantomime of it cast from fingers of hallucinating algorithms.

That is the image of my fear. They'll be no need for the book burning firemen when we will all freely give up the word for language model.

It's still a bad source for academics. If you're writting a paper and require to cite your sources then you shouldn't be listing wikipedia as the source, you should be citing the sources linked on the wikipedia page.

Okay, but that's not what teachers/people mean when they say Wikipedia isn't a good source. They mean it is overall untrustworthy, citing dumb things like "anyone can edit it."

They arent wrong.

When you cite things, you need to go and check the actual base source. You guys just copied from Wiki and left it at that. Thats not real research. Thats like a chud saying he has a source from a youtuber.

Teachers telling you wikipedia is a bad source is solely is due to what I just said and people repeat it, because they failed to understand the context. No teacher was saying wikipedia was a bad source unless they were talking about citations.

Did you read my comment? I'm not talking about citations. I'm saying people who distrust Wikipedia aren't complaining about people not checking citations, they're complaining about Wikipedia overall being untrustworthy.

They are wrong.

You shouldn't ever cite encyclopedia whether the wiki variety or the the Brittanicas.

You should always cite underlying research. Reliable encyclopedias are well sourced assemblies designed to give an overview, detailed or otherwise. They are not intended to be a replacement for research. Which is why they shouldn't be used in citations. You aren't citing a source by citing an encyclopedia. You are citing somebody else citing a source.

They are still useful in myriad other legitimate academic and educational contexts though.

AI is useless, it regurgitates data and presents it as fact even if it's partially collected from satirical or heavily biased sources not to mention it will just create stuff up.
