I just hit chapter 9 where they're arriving at Bree and it's crazy how much of the book is not in the movie, yet the movie still stands solid despite that

We got Bombadil in the new awful show!

Bombadil is in fairness always going to be tough to convincingly pull off, and doesn't really add much to the tale.

Nice cameo for his children's favourite doll though.

They also changed the nature of the Hobbits' meeting with the Elves in the woods on the way to Bree. In the books the Elves are returning to Rivendell from the Grey Havens and they have a feast and party.

Yeah In the movie they have almost no interaction at all other than seeing them pass by right?

I've been thinking about watching the movie up to where Ive read so far so that I can make some comparisons

He doesn't add much to the story of the ring. But I think he does a lot of worldbuilding for Middle Earth.

Another thing that's different about the book and the movies is in the book elves can be (and often are) fucking JOLLY. Yes, Elrond, Galadriel, and other such important folk are often very serious, but that's because they've got a lot on their plate to deal with, but the regular elves joke around, sing, and so forth.

They only sing sad songs in the movies. :/

Does the audio book start with the 5830 page "Concerning Hobbits" part or does it go straight to the actual story?

It depends on which version. I believe Andy Serkis reads it, but the older Rob Inglis version doesn't have it.

I remember it took me 3 attempts to read Fellowship. There was so much exposition at the start of the story that it can be a real slog to get through. And even with that, Fellowship was probably my favorite of the trilogy. Really fun read.

I also love how with any book that was made into a movie, my mind will create its own imagery for what is taking place, even if Id seen the movie first. The LotR books were no exception.

Yeah there's a LOT of detail with not so much going on in the first parts of fellowship, Two Towers has always been my favorite but we shall see on this go around... I've got 5 hours every day that I'm dog sitting and able to listen to my books :)
