And the internet we know so far will probably only lasted like 25 years. Nowadays it's too monopolized and overstuffed with garbage, especially the past 5 years

I feel like 2015/2016 is when I was forced to pay close attention to politics for the first time in my adult life, only to feel like I'm watching a slow moving train wreck of avoidable consequences ever since

Yeah it was a special time and we didn't even realize it. I'm happy I went through high school during that era.

For me I feel it was earlier, around 2008 or so. I get the overall sentiment though.

Long nights spent on a bunch of different websites before bed, 2002-2010.

Message boards, blogs, special interest sites. Good times. Great times, even. And gamefaqs was a huge part of that.

Chasing that high has brought me back here, back to sites like last.fm, and *off* of sites like Facebook, Instagram, and Reddit.

Pre-2007 internet was the best.

Before the fucking normies invaded it.

I was on pokemon special translation web forum in late 2000s, it was awesome following the fan translation progress in real time.

Some people like to say we're looking at the old Internet with rose tinted glasses. I say they're wrong. I'm well aware of the downsides it had, but I'd gladly take those if it meant removing all the filthly morons that plague it today.

2005-2012 was objectively when the internet peaked. Everything started going to shit once everyone began to have access to smartphones and broadband-tier internet speeds.

This is a take you rarely (if ever) hear because even though we're such a doomerist society we still haven't shaken the Y2K-era delusion that assumes if you shove technology in front of the lowest common denominator they'll naturally want to educate themselves and become more cultured.

I read a thing a while back where the head of an AI firm was saying that web sites now are built for humans but in the future they'll be built for AI. The user won't interact with web sites directly, they'll do it through an AI.

That sounded absolutely horrible to me. Like if you said we're going to build a library but you can't read any of the books yourself. This machine will summarize them for you and you just have to trust that it isn't going to distort any information or flatten out any nuance in the process.
