There are several times where the prosecutor says something ala "The prosecution calls detective Dick Gumshoe to the stand." He's never referred to by anyone as 'Richard Gumshoe'.

Dick is not a nickname. His first name is literally Dick.

Detectives are frequently called "dicks," from the Romani word "dik" which means "to look" or "to watch." They are also called "gumshoes" after the kind of footwear they wore (gum rubber soles) when everyone else still wore leather-soled shoes.

So Dick Gumshoe's name literally means Detective Detective.

Just finished AAI2 for the first time a week ago and LOVED seeing Gummy again :-)

Good old Gumshoe. His appearance on screen and his theme song brought some memories back.
