Specifically the schmups Im looking to get back into it. I played years and years ago, back around when they released Hidden Star in Four Seasons. I never managed to 1CC any on normal but I did manage to beat Mountain of Faith extra stage I sorta wanna get good enough to beat these games on lunatic but I dunno how many hundreds of hours of practice that will take. I tend to get careless during runs and die to easy patterns in like stage 3 or so :/ ... Copied to Clipboard!

Funny you should ask! I hadn't played them in a really long time (like, about 10-15 years for the most part). But I turned on Mystic Square (Touhou 5, on PC98) on a whim just two days ago. And I finally managed to beat its Extra Stage, just yesterday. It was a white whale for me for many years, basically the one boss that I felt like I could never beat. And after many many many attempts, I finally did it. Real happy about that. :) Generally my goal on Touhou games is to unlock and beat each Extra stage, which usually also means 1CCing Normal. I've done the Extra Stages on basically all of the games up to... Ten Desires, I believe. Touhou 13. (Phantasmagoria of Flower View being the one exception. But the list also includes Cherry Blossom's Phantasm stage and also Great Fairy Wars's Extra, so.) If I beat the Extra, I feel like the game's beaten. Generally I'll try Lunatic, just to clear them, but the only Lunatic 1CCs I have are on Touhou 1 and 2 (which didn't feel as hard)... and more importantly, Imperishable Night. Imperishable Night probably isn't the hardest Lunatic 1CC? But it certainly took me a ton of practice. On the opposite end, there are Lunatics that I can't even *finish*, like Mountain of Faith. I haven't played any of the newer games in a while, though. I find it real funny that you're talking about Hidden Star in Four Seasons "years and years ago" and... that was released well after I stopped playing lol. Oh, and one of my favorites is Shoot the Bullet. I like the quick-retry challenge format. Alright so I gave EoSD a few shots, I am beating it consistently on Easy, so I gave it a shot on Normal and I beat it there as well 1CC. So that's my first ever 1CC Normal clear of a touhou I am making it a fair way into the Extra stage on EoSD, so I wonder if I should keep at that or keep clearing other games on Normal or even try to get good at Hard modes before going back to try Extras I don't think I'll play the PC98s apart from maybe mystic square... but I do want to beat all the windows mainline ones on at least normal/extra, and some on hard ... EoSD was my first Touhou game. I imagine it was most people's first. I had the hardest time getting used to the gameplay, it just takes so much practice and sort of adjusting your focus to deal with the patterns. And especially beating Flandre. It would probably help just to look up clears so that you aren't blindsided by each new attack. I wonder how each boss truly compares to each in difficulty. I find it kinda hard to judge them side by side when you're in the weeds yourself. But, I feel like Flandre was among the harder Extra stages. Above average in difficulty. I ended up downloading a patch to show your hitbox in EoSD, all of the newer games have that automatically and I felt like I needed the visual feedback since I was still learning. Not sure if it really made that much of a difference though. Rika_Furude posted... I became curious enough to play them. PC98's rough because the tech's so ancient. Bullets blend together and it can be hard on the eyes. And even just getting the games to work... I couldn't get my old PC98 emulator to function correctly this time around, so I ended up using something else called DosBox-X. And yeah, it worked beautifully. But it emulates an entire DOS file system and I had to figure out how to mount and run the game within that, that was hard on its own lol. But the games are also kinda neat in their own way. I like seeing the technical progression. GiftedACIII posted... Use THpractice patch. Oh, interesting. I didn't realize that existed for Touhou, but I've used something similar for Celeste hacks. Being able to practice each part of a difficult stage and then attempting it proper does makes things so much easier. It can make impossible games possible. --- What a fuddy duddy. ...
